Re: Finally. Wanted a Spider..more details!
I have been enjoying the car, more driving than fixing it
With the weather turning, I need to get to the bottom of the parts bin..........
I replaced the chrome window trim with new rubber pieces. I also changed out the side mirror with NOS I had:
I have the rear seats down at the upholstery shop. I ordered matching vinyl and cloth when I bought my Corbeau seats. Yesterday, I took a drill with wire brush to the rusted wire seat frames. I hung them in the garage and brushed them with left over POR 15. I used a foam brush; messy but pretty fast.
I should have the seats and matching boot back by the week end

Pressing on with my interior. Now, for the seat belts.....
Awhile back I ordered new straps from SeatbeltsPlus.com. 7 yards in color 3000, Tan. Did my best to buy interior paint to match. I used SEM # 15033, Saddle Tan. The webbing is glossy, the paint is matte. Happy with the results
Old:
I used a piece of plastic to stiffen the female ends. This plastic was from the rear, hold down edge of my old vinyl roof.

Re: Finally. Wanted a Spider..more details!
I installed the re-webbed seat belts. I needed to make a strap retainer. I came up with this using 1/16 x 3/4 x 48 aluminum bar obtained from my local hardware store:
Painted it with the SEM saddle tan. Installed:
I traced out some of the loose wiring found behind my radio console. The car came with a Coupe console, no radio, a loose light socket, and inoperative door actuated courtesy lights. Using the Fiat Electrical Diagnosis Manual I have to troubleshoot, I found the male end of the 8-wire C35 connector is missing. The two door jamb ground switches feed into this connector. I also located an "Always Hot" connector (runs from the "I" fuse) that I think should be plugged into the Power Ant Switch (if I had one?). Having located the POS and NEG leads I needed to wire in door opening light, I got to it.
I had 2 LED light strings laying about from a boat project. These strings may be 4 feet long with light clusters about 6 inches apart. The lights have a sticky foam backing to make installation and placement easy.:
I ran each string from the door pillars towards center, sticking them on the metal bracing under the dash. I ran the string up over the steering column, with one LED cluster shining directly on the Ignition switch. This picture was taken in my dark garage. The multiple clusters give a fairly uniform illumination

Re: Finally. Wanted a Spider..more details!
Pressing on with my interior. My re-upholstered rear seats have been waiting their turn being stashed in my garage. I re-covered the rear side panels (detailed in a different thread). I mounted those today using SS #8 screws with finish washers.
I stripped the torn black vinyl off the rear trim piece that covers the top hold down bracket. I re-covered it with the tan Corbeau vinyl I have. Again mounted with SS #8 screws and finish washers. It has been about a year since all the interior came out, I had to trial and error the correct order to replace all those rear components. I also had to remove my top since I had forgotten to first replace the plastic side panels that the folding top frame fits into. The best order of re-assembly (IMO) is:
1) The plastic side panels;
2) The rear bracket that holds down the bottom edge of the convertible top;
3) The top, loosely screw in the 4 mounting screws that attach the frame to the chassis. Then, work the back edge under the rear bracket. Fit and tighten;
4) The rear trim piece that covers the rear bracket screws;
5) The side panels;
6) The upper seat cushion;
7) Slide in the lower cushion.
Pictures of the job
Just a couple of minor tasks left
Work to do on the door panels and the center radio console.

I probably shouldn't say this, but it reminds me of a vintage T-Bird! And that ain't bad.

Re: Finally. Wanted a Spider..more details!
Good evening, recently became the owner of a 79 Fiat 124 Spider and I'd like to remove/replace the upper and lower control arms, spring, shock and brakes given that I'd have the whole thing apart at the same time. This may be a crazy question but is this something a novice could do and how long would this job really take assuming things progress at a reasonable rate? What might the typical time just to RE/RE and Upper/Lower Control arms?
Thanks
Parrish

Re: Finally. Wanted a Spider..more details!
As a novice? Hmm. There's a lot of steps on that job where you need to know where to apply how much force without being excessive. You also need special tools that are dangerous if misused, like a spring compressor. And a press for pushing the old bushings out and new ones in. Afterwards everything needs to be properly fastened, otherwise you are creating a potentially life-threatening situation.
It took me two weekends, taking my time with a lot of "while I'm in there jobs" and taking breaks to drink beer. I've been wrenching on cars for 15+ years.
Cheers
