No, I don't know anyone in that neighborhood. It's not exactly where I grew up, and not anywhere that you'd have to drive through to get someplace. I realize that there's a chance that the guy will be angry that I found him. If that's the case, then I'm no worse off than I am now, right? But seriously, would any of you be mad if your car's previous owner called and asked about the car? All the car folks I know LOVE to talk about their cars.azygoustoyou wrote:Do you know anyone in that neighborhood still? If so, You could say you were talking with your friend and they informed you that they noticed how the neighbor had a Fiat. And, as being so friendly just wanted to meet the person.

Re: My former 1985 1/2 Spider FOUND!!!
You might start with a letter. Be honest-tell him you were searching for your old car and came up with this adress in your search. You'd like to talk to him about the car, but if he'd rather not, then he can just choose not to respond. Give him your contact info and see if he calls. That seems a little less like you've been staking out his house, and gives him the choice as to whether he wants to actually talk to you. It might freak him out a little if you show up on his doorstep.

Re: My former 1985 1/2 Spider FOUND!!!
In all honesty I would just call the guy and tell him you were in the market for a Fiat and just wondered if he would sell you your old one since it already had your farts in the seat. I don't think any car owner would be upset if he was contacted by a previous owner. The only issue is how much love he has poured into the car. The owner just might say come get it I need the money and it is an answered prayer for both of you. The honest approach is best and I don't think it will cost you more being that you are already in the market for one and would like your old one if it was reasonable. If he is upset give him my number

Not a problem. I keep in touch with all the people I sell Fiats to so I don't have to stalk them.
This reminds me of the calls and letters I'd get from the previous owner of my 72. He was interested to know how the restoration was going and if he found anything pertaining to the car, he'd send it my way. It never bothered me in the least. The PO of my Devil X even emails me to see how things are going. It'll be hard to break the news to him about that car.

Congrats on finding the car! I believe in the direct approach.Call him or write him and be up front about wanting your first car back. After all,it may be sitting in a garage not having moved for 10 years, owner may have passed,etc...Unless you make contact ,there is no way to tell.If he loves the car and wouldnt dream of parting with it,I am sure he will convey that to you. What area is the car in now? There may be a member here that could look into it for you before you make contact? Anyway, just my .02 worth and good luck!!!

Still trying to get in touch with him. I've been reluctant to leave a message on the machine, but they never pick up the phone.Gunsmith wrote:Well did you contact the current owner yet? Is there a an old flame in your future?

you could really freak him out by telling him the car was stolen from you many years ago and when it's rightfully returned to you he will get nothing for it

Send the owner a letter. People don’t get many real letters in the mail these days. If nothing else, curiosity will make him open it. I tend not to pick up the phone when it is a number I do not recognize. You’re not leaving a message, so your number is becoming a nuisance to them.
Dear Mr. Current Owner,
Once upon a time I owned a 1985.5 Pininfarina Spider that I purchased in 1993. I lost that car due to my own stupidity
and poverty. For a long time I have wondered what happened to it. Fortunately my circumstances have changed and
some research on the Internet led me to the discovery that you now own that car.
I would very much like to see that car again, if only for a short visit. If you would be so inclined, I would like to discuss
with you the possibility of buying my old, first car from you. Please kindly consider my offer.
I may be reached at tel: xxx or emailed at: xxx@
Sincerely,
Jeff

and tell him your first child was conceived in that car and how wonderful it would be if your first grandchild was conceived in the same spot. That'll melt his heart

No - don't tell him anyone was conceived in that car. Then he'll KNOW your lying. There's hardly enough room in that car to get to second base, much less conceive anything.
