I am also replacing the air intake box with a cone style setup from Gus aka spiderman. Not sure if this changes intake flow all that much.

Mark: If I replace all the pipe with 2 1/4" right now is it possible to add your header system at a later date when I feel better about spending the money? I know you said your system runs down the middle of the car. Can this be made to work?

Is this increase in diamater going to be detrimental to existing performance with the stock header? Should I just leave the stock pipe?

rersonator are available in the size needed, and yes Mbouse you are the exception to every rule. i was told poping on deceleration was caused by unburnt fuel in the exhaust. just my 2 cents. ill try and get a clip of how my car sounds.

I just ordered the cat back stainless exhaust from funimported.com. It eliminates the resonator and now I don't have to worry about replacing again.

Can someone go through the thinking of what is needed in a muffler system from the ex. manifold to the rear of the car. What is an ideal pipe diameter and WHY. What are the included necessary mufflers or resonators, and how does each change the setup. My car is a F.I. car, does its needs change compared to a carb. What is too large or too small of a pipe.

Thanks

Maybe someone can answer your question, but I think the best I can do is "It depends". I looked at the SAE International site and there are more than 22,000 papers on file (and for sale) covering a mutitude of topics related to exhaust systems, such as durability, NVH (noise, vibration & harshness), pollutants, valvetrain wear, heat dissipation, performace, particulates, etc., etc. You could make a life study of it.

From local hot rodders I've heard the rule of thumb of one inch of diameter for every 1000 cc's of displacement. Works for me :) Especially if it sounds good!

I went the same route; bought the kit from Gus. The kit arrived on time and is of excellent build quality. I decided to change my original air box out since it was patched together by the PO.

My filter assembly is not on the car yet, but I can take pictures and post it.

Ps. Craig (ga.spider) has the same kit installed in his car.

Two years ago IAP had one of their yearly inventory reduction and closeout sales. They apparently bought an entire stock of 124 coupe mufflers thinking they would fit the spider. The only difference was the angle of the pipe that goes over the rear axle. The rubber hanger supports on the muffler body were in the correct locations. It had a 2" inlet pipe, was a straight through free flow design and only cost me $16, which included shipping in a huge box. All I had to do was cut the pipe where it entered the muffler, rotate it a few degrees, and weld it back. I ceramic coated the outside with the rattle can type, after 2 years of daily driver service it still looks like when just installed.

You may want to call them and see if they still have any of those mufflers.

I have a downpipe that a guy cut with a torch instead of the bolts at the flange. I was going, or my welder friend, to cut at the point where it goes 2 into 1 and make a flange to fit a 2 inch pipe back,no cat.
This might take a while as he is busy and I don't really need it now.
This was going on a FI engine.
Thought this might help flow without a lot of loot being spent, but don't know for sure.

Yes, the filter on the picture is K&N RR2801(red). You can also but RR2802 (blue) or RR2803 (polished).

Ps. The K&N model information was researched and provided to me by Craig (ga.spider). :-)

If you look down the page @''powerstack free flow kit '' there is a discussion on these setups. I bought a nice kit from a fellow member ,Gus Zeisman. It is a nice setup made just for f.i. Spiders. It is less than $100 w/ a K&N cone filter. He will send you info and pix; fiatman@comcast.net. Tell him Craig sent you ,He's gonna owe me a bunch of beer at FFO.
