Valve seals?

Thanks for looking RRoller. The exit for the breather is into the air filter housing is it not? If oil was coming up the breather would I not also expect a messed up carb? Filter looked clean but could have been new before I got. (I only put 300 miles on her).

Am I missing another exit for the breather into the bores? If clogged would it build pressure and force oil some other way into the bores to burn?

How would I check the breather valve - engine is out? :( . Would be nice if that was it and I could just drop her back in, fix head and go... There is nothing in my books about it....

Thanks for the suggestion klweimer.

Valve seals are hard but in one piece. The exhaust valves are very sloppy in their guides. These are no my list to replace, will do the seals at the same time.

Sorry, I am an FI fellow, I don't know how the plumbing works on the carb models. But if the breather end empties into the air filter and it does not have oil in it, then it is likely something else causing the symptoms. Your carb throat looks pretty clean.

if the breather was blocked it may force oil up into the cylinders and get burned.

Of course! Never thought of that, I was thinking too much oil was passing by, but that would do it too.

Thanks guys. If it was blocked would it not push oil up the dipstick hole before past the rings and into the bores?

Is there a known way to check for breather functionality?

I suppose I could undo the tube attached to the engine and push some compressed air through it but do not want to trash the thing??

You should be able to pull the bolt in the center of the round housing that attaches to the block and take the breather assembly out. On the FI engines anyway. Mine was completely blocked with gunk. Never had any oil leak out through dipstick area.

I am not sure of the dynamics involved with a of a blocked breather. if your rings were worn and the breather blocked it would create a lot of pressure in your crankcase but if they were not worn as the piston rises it may create a low pressure under the piston which might draw oil up. not sure maybe someone else understands this better.
