I read this post this morning and thought, it's a beautiful Sunday morning and my overflow bottle is disgusting, can't see a thing in there (just like Ron's). No sand around but lot's of rice and I'm getting nowhere, even with industrial strength degreaser, full strength, instead of water. 79 Spider, lots of gunk and grease buildup. Switched the rice for aquarium stones (thanks Tappy) and voila, clean overflow bottle almost instantly. Worked like a charm, thanks for the suggestions.

No sand around!?! I've almost forgotten what that was like:
