Thanks for keeping telling me I must have an air leak. I found it at last at the gasket connecting carb to the manifold. The nuts had loosened and needed tightening. I have a nice steady idle again. Many thanks.

I once pulled out the camshafts and a new carburetor from a 1438 engine because I was convinced it wasn't an air leak. It was, as I discovered once the carb on a bench, a $.05 rubber cap.
