Wow, 40 lbs. That's a 50% increase in weight.
I had no idea, never thought to weigh them. What do you think accounts for increase?
That's unsprung weight too, even worse.

I would guess that its just built stronger to handle the torque from the 2 liter. It has extra brackets near the ends that the early one dosent.

The later rear ends came from the Fiat 131/132 range, which were larger, heavier cars than the 124, so they had to have stronger rear ends.

from 131, very diferent to rear end on 132. may look simmilar at first glance, but there are no interchangable parts except wheel bearings.
