When I was teaching my son he did what I think most people do naturally. He let the clutch out slowly at first (when not engaged) then quickly at the end (when it was starting to engage).

I had him repeat the mantra let it out fast - then slow, many times and he finally got the feel of it.

I would suggest temporarily adjusting up the idle speed enough (1200 RPM) so he doesn't need much throttle when releasing the clutch. Then adjust back down later.

I taught my kids to drive standard when they were first learning to drive because they'd be better drivers...and now they insist on only owning manuals. And I taught them on our BMW convertible. Burning clutch?...who cares. It's just the cost of having kids. :?
