Anyone chrome an older steering wheel ?
Re: Anyone chrome an older steering wheel ?
tape the wood off and stay away from it best you can. The wood can be cleaned up to look great. Fine steal wool and 2 cans of clear and about 6 coats
Re: Anyone chrome an older steering wheel ?

Hey azygoustoyou,
I'm wondering how your steering wheel clear coat has held up these past three years since your post. I'm getting ready to work on mine and would like to polish and clear coat like you did but it's a lot of work if it didn't hold up (hope it did).

Good to know....(especially since I did the job today). It looks great and gave me a reason to buy some new Dremel do-dads.
Thanks for letting me know.

I did my wheel about 6 months ago. Stripped the black paint off using a palm sander, then followed up with coarse then to fine sand paper and and then buffed it to a polished finish using real and synthetic steel wool (000), cleaned it with brake cleaner (or anything that will removed the dirt and oils and dry clean), then sprayed with automotive clear, about 3-4 coats. This was all done with the black grip of the wheel taped off.
It looks great and has held up great so far and I drive the car a couple of times a week.
