you can get a rebuilt unit for about $65 at most any parts store. I may have a good used one if you want to go that route. I can check my stock this afternoon

I would be happy with a good used pump, so that would be great Mark. Thanks a bunch to everyone for their help! And thank you to Mike for offering up his 80 carb!

smog pump

Post by manoa matt »

You can get a brand new smog pump for $33 at Autozone/ Advance/Checker their all the same store. Parts America.

You may have to buy it online and have it shipped, but at least its new, and it may come with a warranty.

You can also get the air pump exaust check valve. Thats the part on top of the air injection rail. with the large hose going into it.

Thanks Matt, the check valve needs to be replaced as well, according to the shop. Will check into local auto stores here.

are you sure that pump at Autozone is new? The last rebuilt unit I bought cost $65. I didn't think anyone had built new pumps in years. Although, even if it's rebuilt, $33 is very cheap

Sorry guys, Yeah its remanufactured here is the link:

http://www.partsamerica.com/productdeta ... 54&PTSet=A

comes with 1 year warranty.

Checker/Chucks /Kragans are the same store Autozone is different

They probably won't have this item in stock at any store. You probably have to order it online. If your order is over $50 they give free shipping.
So add on a timing belt and maybe a new cap/rotor/wires and now you got $50 and free shipping.

Here is the link to the check valves:

Check out what other replacement parts they have for Fiats, its pretty amazing how much stuff they carry that IAP and Vicks don't carry. Alot cheaper too.

I am thoroughly confused. I got a phone call from the auto shop (the one that's supposed to help me get my spider smogged) and he told me that my air check valves need to be replaced, my vacuum advance on the distributor needs to be replaced, and my EGR doesn't work.

Here's where my red warning flags go up -- he says he can get the air check valves for $160.00 a piece, yes that's one hundred sixty dollars, the vacuum advance for $50.00 and the EGR for another $160.00.

I looked online at americaparts.com and kragen auto parts. They have a GP Sorensen Air Check Value for the 79 124 spider for $25.99. Is this the same thing? And does this look funny to anybody else? My gut feeling is to run down and pull my fiat out of this shop!

I think he's either trying to pull a fast one or he doesn't know where to get the parts. It may be true that you need these components replaced. All three of these parts have delicate rubber diaphrams and they are all situated close to the heat of the engine.

I tried looking for the egr valve through the typical vendors IAP and Vick no luck, also no luck with internet sources.

I did find the distributor vacume advance at IAP for $32.20

I also looked for the check valve at rockauto.com (Great site, pictures of parts, very cheap) check valve = $7 yes $7 no effin kidding

I rarely take my car to a shop unless its something complex , or I don't feel comfortable doing it myself. But in the event I do need to take my car to the shop, you must be like a prossecuting attorney (never ask a question unless you already know the answer.) Before taking your car to the shop, know whats wrong, what the parts cost, how long it will take.

That being said, print out the pages from checker and rock auto. Go to the shop and ask what is the manufacturer of the check valve. When he tells you its AC Delco or Standard Motor Products, or whatever, you ask what the part # is then tell him the actual price. Watch his jaw drop.

If he is trying to charge you that much for parts, then he will also try to jack you on the labor. You can install ALL of these parts in less than
1 1/2 hours.

Some shops will install parts that you provide, but they may not warranty them. Some shops will only install parts that they get from their sources.

Thanks for the input. I called the shop and told the guy of what I found. He didn't say much, other than I wonder what the difference was, because he got quotes from outside sources as well. I told him that if he was going to help me with the car, I would buy the parts and put those in and when I get the other carb he can rebuild the carb. He was okay with that. I ordered the parts through IAP and Kragen, I should have all parts by Monday (with the exception of the EGR valve - still can't find that one). Then we'll run another CO2 test.

I ended up pulling my Fiat out of that shop. And with all of the reading and research done, I am going to get in and do it myself. That way I know it's done right. Thanks for all the input, it sure has helped me, and I feel a bit more comfortable now.

Good luck! I rebuilt my dual Webers by using a Weber service manual and taking 34 pictures while I disassembled each part. The best part about it is they work! :D

Hoo RAY!! I am so happy to hear that you're gonna attempt it yourself!!

When you getter done, breeze past that shop and show them what you did that they "couldn't".

Mike, BTW I got the carb and it looks good! Thanks. I'm going to rebuild it while the car is still operative and then switch them over.

That sounds like a really good plan. i always do my best not to change more than one thing at a time, if the changes are gonna affect performance.

That way, if i get a negative reaction, i am no more than one step away from resolution....and usually know the source of the issue.

i am happy that Queenie was able to donate her transplanted heart to another Fiat.
