8k mile oil changes on new 500?

Metal in the oil during break in isn't normal in newer engines for one thing nor is it normal in older engines
If your concerned about the oil change it if that will help you sleep better but if they sugguest to leave it
in then they trust what the Factory has performed tests thousands of times already .

Metal in the oil a bad sign, possible bad job of cleaning parts before assembly or poor machine work and
clearance checking on tolerances . As for oil I change my truck oil about every 6 to 8,000 miles and i use
castrol high millage 10 40w the engine has 150k on it and still runs great .

Daniel, it may be only a spec of debris from running an engine in, but there is going to be some wear-in, I don't care how precise parts are made. Why would we think Fiat/Chrysler would make their factory production parts with zero tolerance when racing engine products even have variances?
I think Trey thinks the way I do. I feel like you can't hurt a car by changing the oil too much. The oil is going to break down with heat and friction. I'll drive the 2 hours to get my 1000 mile oil change at the dealer and buy several cartridges so I can change the oil myself every other oil change. Like I told the tech, the manufacturer doesn't care what happens to the car after the 4 year/50,000 mile warranty. I'll have to take my chances on voiding the warranty by changing the oil myself.
My 99 Grand Prix is supposed to only have the oil changed every 7500 miles and the transmission serviced every 100k miles. I can tell you after 50k miles the tranny is ready for new fluid. The coolant they used was supposed to last 100k miles too, but the intake didn't last long enough from material degredation from the new coolant to test that theory.

Denise I completely agree with you about not hurting an engine by changing the oil often as i used to do that
myself but the oil i use now is far better then what i used years ago and last longer I would hope so cause it cost 5
bucks a quart .

as far as voiding the Warranty you don't have to tell them you changed the oil !

No information on my new to me Spider, just brought it home night before last, but I can share some experiences with my other vehicles.

Wife's 2004 Civic Hybrid, currently has 110K on it, oil changes every 10K with Mobil 1, Blackstone oil analysis done every third oil change has shown no significant change in engine condition over that time.

My daily driver, a 2006 Honda Element AWD. I have about 75K on it, and it is used in some high stress circumstances (light off-roading, dusty conditions, etc) Oil analysis done every 30K, and the one at 60K still showed almost exactly the same measurements as the 30K report, both indicative of an engine in perfect condition. 10K oil changes, Mobil 1

1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia - 122K on this one, and it's a real test for oil. A little 85HP four cylinder pushing a 4000 pound vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick. 7.5K oil changes, Mobil 1. Oil analysis show it's been at the same condition since I started testing it over 60K miles ago.


Long story short, I would have absolutely no fear going 8K with the 500. IMHO, changing out Mobil 1 at 3K on any car is being overcautious by a long shot. If you want to stick with 3K changes, stick with dino juice and save some money.

I don't think it's legal to void your warranty as long as the parts used meet the manufactures requirements and the work is done properly.
