When I lived in San Francisco I used to ride my bike to work. I got there faster than taking the car or bus and didn't have to pay for parking. I can understand the lure of bike riding on a scenic road. I find it ironic though that so many bicyclists ride for their health only to wind up injured or dead. There are much safer ways to get exercise. I have always maintained that no road should be built or improved without the addition of a dedicated bike lane. I used to ride my bike to work on a backroad between towns only to find the commuters using it more every day to avoid the traffic on the main road. It was a nice fairly level winding road following along the river. It would take me past a park, a golf course and a few small farms. Very pleasant. Then it got so scary at times I finally had to give it up. It was in an unincorporated part of the county so you never saw police there. It was like the speed limit didn't exist.

Good point about dedicated bike lanes when planning road work. Have to tell you though Penticton has some real nut-bars. A bike lane was added on a secondary road through town several years ago. Great stuff, but my wife and I went for a 80 km round trip ride soon after the lane was implemented, and as we came onto the lane.. I looked down and dam near s..t myself. Someone had thrown roofing nails all along the bike lane. I guess it takes all kinds but I hope this person did/does not have kids, hate to see those genetics passed on.
