Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
what did you use for a head gasket? anything special?
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
Jay,
If you're thinking turbo, you won't have to do much. The "good" Goetze brand head gasket will hold together to 20psi, no problem, assuming you're not detonating. 18psi will give you plenty of power. You don't need to change anything internally in the engine, compression ratio is fine, so are the cams. That being said, $700 is a pretty tight budget for a turbo, even with Megasquirt already installed. You'll still need to fabricate a manifold and downpipe, buy a turbo, oil/coolant lines for the turbo, bigger injectors, tubing, clamps, and hopefully an intercooler. I'd go with a Garrett GT28RS, I've had great success with these turbos.. even the normal GT28 (non ball bearing). I think your budget would be more like $1400 considering you already have MS.
Don't forget tuning. As always the best bang for your buck is tuning what you already have. There are sooo many people who dump $$$$'s into their motors and make less power than stock because they neglect TUNING. Pay for some dyno time!
FWIW I also have exhaust flanges laser cut.. I'll send the drawing if anyone needs the dimensions. I also have the flange dimensions for various turbos..

Hi Jason. Yea i'm using your crank pulley for megasquirt right now. good stuff. so here's my concerns.... i have an 1800 head, 2l block. AND the block was decked .015 to get higher compression on my first rebuild. so i dont know if my static CR is too high. when i did the head, i "CC'ed" it. i have the numbers written down somewhere but i believe i had 53cc in each cylinder head (not for sure on that). so i believe i'm running at right around 9 to 1. will she hold together at 9 to 1?
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
Static compression ratio is usually not the problem, where you run into trouble are with pistons that make flame front propagation difficult (domed pistons etc). Another factor is what engine management you're using, with MS you won't have any trouble. I've turboed a number of cars (Miatas, BMW's etc) with high static CR's, above 10:1.
Lowering the compression is just an extra safety factor... just like ceramic coating pistons, forged pistons, rods, none of these are necessary if you're doing it right.
The number one killer is detonation, caused by bad tuning.

Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
well this is good news. i suppose ill focus now on just getting my motor back together. its in 23423 pieces in the garage along with my trans. Im waiting for parts and the machine shop to give my crankshaft back. i suppose ill be picking your brain more Jason for help with the turbo setup. i also know Eric Mccann has done this exact set-up on his car. So i'm sure he could be of some help as well.
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
until you get a good tune with a turbo build you want to err on the side of running a little lean. that will make less power but it will protect you form detonation.

lol, my bad got them flipped around. I'm a bit dyslexic, I do that kind of thing a lot.fiatfactory wrote:Don't you mean "err on the side of running a little RICH"Zmatt wrote:until you get a good tune with a turbo build you want to err on the side of running a little lean. that will make less power but it will protect you form detonation.
Running lean would cause higher combustion temps and melt pistons, it can also lead to backfiring / detonation under load, which is what kills engines really fast.
BTW zmatt, hows the mazda engine swp going ....

well right now I'm still getting the car back together, but I'm talking to the old man about it. it's still ultimately his car. He heard about the guy with the rx-7 engine and thought that was the coolest thing ever. As far as making good power goes I can either use my spare 2.0L engine and do an efi/turbo build, which would take a lot of engine modification, or I could try to swap in any number of good power plants. By Toyota buddy is pushing for the 4a-ge. the fast he has several motors laying around including a 20v doesn't hurt. A rotary would be really quick, but it would have oil issues have poor fuel econ and be expensive. Another option is the BP engine form a Miata. Right now i like the turbo TC and 4age the most. They would be the cheapest and have the most information readily available. But to put things in perspective this summer's goal is to get the car restored, not supped up. This would be next summer at the earliest.

Your car is beautiful. What wheels are those wheels?
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
BWA makes them. i bought them off ebay several years ago. BWA is a great company come to find out. wheels are lightweight, high quality, and the best feature of all, brake dust does NOT stick to that paint.Zmatt wrote:Your car is beautiful. What wheels are those wheels?
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
do they still make wheels? google gives me ebay and slot car parts.
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
yes they still make wheels. I don't know about this exact model though... snazzy aren't they? im working on a way now to change the bolt hole pattern on the axles of a fiat to 4x100. with a little machine work trickory, i believe i can make is happen. Then i can buy those mass produced honda civic wheels. i would have to drill and tap the axles, brake rotors and spacers. alot of work but it'll make the car future proof in the wheel department.
Re: Ideas of taking my motor to the next level
although, there are some folks selling 4x98 pattern wheels on ebay now at a fairly competitive price. im kinda glad i didnt get 15 inch wheels though. some of those wheels just look too big under the car for my taste.. i bet they respond better in the handling department though.
