Any plumber here that can give me some advice?

Post by kensmith »

I have a double sink in my kitchen, left side has regular drain that is working fine. Right side has a disposal and it is draining too slow. The disposal is working fine, just the water doesn't drain very well. If I run water and use the disposal, is will fill up and bubble up out the disposal. Clog in right side or bad disposal? Plumbing is all black PVC pipe. Thanks

I'd check the distributor or the timing

Sorry can't really help.

The muffler bearing is fine and the headlight oil is full. Not sure what the problem is?

It'll be plugged up.. perhaps try a coat hanger with a small hook or time to take the thing apart. I usually try draino first though.

90% of disposal installations will be setup with a small pipe exiting the disposal on the side of the disposal unit. WAY back, they would tie that directly over to the drain for the other sink, until they started learning that too frequently ths would send disposal refuse cavitating out of the drain in the non-disposal sink, making big stinky messes. Now more common is to tie them together in a wye, closer to the back wall. I've even seen instances f a 'P' trap on the non disposal side prior to joining with the disposal.

so to your problem:
How does the drain on the other side flow? You can narrow down the problem here by determining if this is a blockage in the drain after the two sinks join? This is common, and will need to be treated the way any other drain blockage is handled, but through the left sink.
Also not uncommon is the smaller diameter pipe exiting the disposal. One of the issues I see frequently s that there is not enough slope on that pipe, and so the food-stuffs that are ground-up get lodged in that smaller diameter pipe, hoping that the cavitiation of the water will help wash it through. Unforthunately, this is more difficult to rectify, because there normally is no way to get to the inside of that pipe without removing the disposal frm the sink and then hosing it out in the back yard.

Me personally; I HATE PLUMBING. the contractors' license catagory that I carry says I am licensed to do some (limited) plumbing.... but I'm smart enough that when it comes to more than applying DRANO, I call a pro. it's worth it to me. YMMV.
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

The Y described above may have a baffle in it to slow down any back flow. This is a serious restriction and can clog with food on a regular basis. If it is really bad, it may require disassembly, a very unpleasant job. When mine clogs, which happens about twice a week when my mother-in-law is here, I get a couple of inches of water in the offending sink and vigorously use a plumbers friend to send shockwaves down the drain. Be patient, this takes time. Also if you have a dishwasher with a vent in the sink, wrap it with a towel or you will find a serious mess on your hands.

Take a bunch of pictures, take it apart and clean everything, put it back together.

My bet is the pipe between the garb and the main drain is restricted with ground up junk. Doesn't look too hard to get apart to check.

If you take out the two bolt's on the disposal and loosen the upper and lower nut on the drain-t you can turn the horizontal pipe away from the disposal. Than loosen the nut in between the t and the pipe and take out the pipe and clean it out.
When you reassemble it make sure the pipe is sloping down torts the drain.

P.S. The top boot will be in the mail on Tuesday, Tobi

Fixed. It was egg shells. We had eggs for dinner the night before and when I pulled the horizontal pipe out, there was shells filling the Y at the main drain. I mean totally backed up there. Cleaned it out and works perfect now. Thanks guys!

PS....Tobi, I shipped your boot yesterday USPS.

if one side drains good and the other does not than its the pipe to the disposal or disposal. draw yourself a map of how it goes together than take it a part and run a metal coat hanger threw the pipe ONLY ! not the disposal it can get stuck. if you put it back together and the problem is still there its in the disposal. can try drain cleaner that side only than run the disposal while running hot water after the designated wait time. (side note: while your playing with your disposal you will notice a small reset button on the bottom of the disposal. a lot of people do not know of this and when there disposal stops working they go buy a new one. try the reset button first) good luck. if you need more help feel free to ask? I put the drain tiles in the house that is in the movie "Out of sight " with Jenifer Lopez and George Clooney. 3 times because the owner could not decide where he wanted to put his bowling alleys in the basement

Hey! I'm not a nut! I'm an electrician, that's why I know so much about plumbing.
