At this point you do not need to remove pumpkin. You are right, axle should not move in-out 1" . Pull caliper, pull rotor, pull axle in and out to see what is not right. Pull snap ring, axle comes out, repair whatever is amiss and put er back together.

well amongst the football...the car is up on jacks and the first thing i think could be a problem is the long trailing arm is snapped in half... as it was going could it mimickk a problem.. like loose wheel bearing....also what now.. just replace the arm... should i do all three..( there are three right??) do i go into the axle?? not that it is up on stands under the car and not the rear end the side to side play i thought was coming frome the wheel does not appear to be there...

panhard rod... keeps the axle from moving side to side... that is what has snapped......

there is an early and late style panhard rod. make sure you order the right one. never seen one break that wasnt in a wreck.

Glad you figured it out...btw the trailing arms are weak as they are. Doesn't mean it was in a wreck. Someone may have hit a curb or it may have been rusty. I have broke two myself before I made my own. Check the car for filler. A paint thickness gauge will tell you....just my two bits....:)

Anyway a new arm is definately an easy fix.
