Dumb Throttle Question? You Decide

I have never seen any documentation (overlooked it perhaps?) that addresses the hand throttle under the dash.

What I have discovered is that I can use it as a sort of "poor man's cruise control" by pulling it out far enough to match the pressure of the foot feed and turning it clockwise a quarter of a turn.

It works reasonably well, but the roads are pretty level around here.
Am I doing some irreparable harm to the car?

It wouldn't be the first time.

You could use it for that. I use it when warming up the engine to keep the idle up.

Just don't forget that you have it pulled out. If you push in the clutch, and have the throttle pulled out, you may over-rev the engine.

the difference with real cruise is that it will maintain the same speed as road conditions vary. The hand throttle won't do that obviously.

i used to put small pliers on it to hold it open when i would drive up to oregon. 700 mile trip one way

does anyone have a picture, or diagram as to how this is supposed to hook up under the dash at the pedal?

i guess i must be dense when it comes to somethings, maybe most if you ask my wife. i just can't figure out how to connect this cable.

as I recall the cable hooks directly to the carb, not the pedal

It seems to depend on the year.
I was going to take pics of both cars but the only got something usable from the 1970 model.

The cable goes through the plastic tube marked with the arrow.

You can see where it attaches to the carb in this pic:

When you pull the knob it is independent of the foot feed linkage.

It's a different story on the 1975, the cable is connected to the pedal and the pedal actually pulls down to the floor when you retract the knob.
I couldn't get any lighting in there to take a pic of the 75.

Oops, meant to say on the 75 the throttle is connected to the pedal cable

You are right! it is different on many model years. I have the cable on the '78. it is supposed to connect to the throttle pedal assembly inside the firewall.

a) my bi-focals never seem to work for under the dash work and it is never light enough down there to see properly
b) i cannot get my fat head and arms in there to actually perform blind surgery

if i knew how this cable was SUPPOSED to connect, i might be able to actually perform the procedure.

It doesn't attatch at the pedal, but on the other end of the pedal shaft. Feel the far left end of the pedal shaft assembly while pressing the pedal with your other hand. That little tab that sticks off the left end is what the cable mounts to. On my spider, the cable seems to be pushed through the tab, then folded back on itself and back through the tab.
