Well I have spent easily over 40 hours prepping these wheels. I did two about a month ago. They seemed to have turned out fine. Today I spent a few hours finishing prepping the remaining two. I sprayed them as recommended on the can but it seems that it is peeling up on the edges, oh the humanity! I think I'll have to start over :(

wheels are one of the most difficult paint applications. I've done a couple of sets. in the old days, you needed to use zinc-oxide primer to stick to aluminum or magnesium. I think i would use epoxy now. If you did any bead blasting on the wheel that may be your paint lifting issue. It is very hard to get the wheels dust free. I bit the bullet and sent mine to a powder coater. He was not happy with the quality, but i knew it wouldnt look like a new wheel because of the porous nature of the wheels and the poor condition of being on the road for the last 40 years. clearcoat is a must with silver unless you want to redo your wheels every few years.
Polishing the outside rim can be very frustrating on used rims. any flaw in the wheel rim will stick out like a sore thumb unless it is sanded out first. When you get done, you have a high maintainence wheel, for the polished area will oxidize.

Well I went to the powder coater here and they wanted almost what a new set would cost plus they can only powder coat the entire wheel which was definitely not what I was going for. I didn't blast them. Stripped them, hand sanded, polished, wiped them down with thinner, self etching primer, then black, then clear wheel coating. First set came out ok. I guess maybe it was too cold, though I did everything in front of a space heater. I am going to let them cure in a spare bedroom, then see if I can salvage them, if not I'll repeat the process and maybe paint them at work next time.
