Good eye Steve! now that you've cicrled the problem area, it is quite apparent. but i sure didn't see that before! I sure do appreciate all of your helpful knowledge and advice.

I have 4 different 1800 heads on my shelf (well, one is currently on the motor in the car). I'll pull some casting numbers.

I the meantime: y"all got any suggestions for a good source for some pistons that wont totally ruin the "budget" part of this build?

from the looks of that cylinder, I doubt much water was getting in. A clean piston will result from water injection and that is really full of gunk. The clean edge on the piston indicates leaking rings

Mark: from what you can see in the photo, I can understand why you'd say that. But in person, you would see that the damage done is certainly by water..... there should be NOTHING in the crankcase to get past the rings that would cause this sort of problem. it's definitely water.

I have a question. I've been slowly dissassembling. I only get about 10 minutes / day on this thing, max. So I'm at best "tinkering".

But as I've dissasembled a little more, I've discovered that the rods and rod-caps are numbered. I've never seen this before except in motors I've built, 'cuz I did it myself....

So my question is: did Fiat do this? or is this a sign that smeone has rebuilt this before? I haven't taken any measurmeents yet, but I've been really hoping to find that this hasn't been bored / rebuilt before. There might not be enough bore left, if it has been.

thanks to both of you for the reply.

I'll try to get back out to the garage this weekend, and if I do, I'll snap some pics of the markings, just for the sharing.

I took a chance and called a machinist I used to use when building race motors many moons ago. He was one of those guys who has a 1-syllable name, but everyone knows exactly who you're talking about, because his reputation preceeded him at every race-meet, car-show, street-drag and chest-bump in a 500 mile radius. We called him "Red".

Now, red was an old man the first time I took a motor to him.... in 1986. And he was STILL an old man the LAST time I took him a block to work on.... in 1998! But I was hopeful that maybe he'd passed the trade on to his boys, or???

but guess-what: RED ANSWERED THE PHONE@!!!!

He's gonna take my block for me and do the works. I'll start with a deburr all the way through it, then We'll hot-tank it, bore it, and deck it just a touch. I don't think I'll touch the bottom end. It looks fantaastic! (of course I'll mic it out first).

Then we talked about the crank. I'm going to put it on a diet and then let him balance it back out for me.

And he's going to both the block and the crank for me for less than $200, so my budget won;t suffer tooo bad.

after a couple of dissapointments, I'm pretty stoked about this project again. I just wish I could find some time to work on it. :(

So, the next time I'm out there, I'll be stripping the bottom-end. I might as well mic it all out at that point. Can anyone tell me what the factory msrmts were, and what the tolerances should be?

I probably did myself a disservice by burying my last question at the bottom of my last post:

Can anyone tell me the correct measurements for the crank, and what the tolerances should be on the journals, so I can mic this out and see if I need to do something on the bottom end?

There's a SHOP MANUAL available somewhere???? :?:

I have no shop manual. Not sure I'd like to hear what they're getting for it, if it's really available somewhere. All I'd ever want from it would be torque specs and easurements, like these.

Do YOU have a shop manual?
