Does anybody have an idea of the road conditions down there? It rained up here last night and the roads are pretty wet.

Weather.com shows that everything should be dry for today.

You want to meet up and caravan somewhere along the way. If so, give me a call. Caleb will be riding with me.

We had a good drive, had 11 cars turn out, 9 spiders and 2 X's although 1 X driver could not stay for the drive. It was COLD and rainy here last night, and this morning there was ice on the road in the shady spots. One spider driver got a little bit more than sideways and just missed the wall, but I'm not telling on him!

What's your favorite color on a Spider?

That makes 5 in red!

Telling war stories, with Spiders and an X in the foreground, you can see it was a beautiful day as well:

My newly installed rear-end stayed attached to the car and was nice and quiet, so I'm calling today a success!

You can see my car in Jim's picture above. It's the red one.
Here's a shot from the rest stop that shows the terrain we're driving in. We go from the bottom to the top and back down the other side.

I had more pictures, but it looks like they'd be the same as Jim's.
Good job Jim.

Getting ready for a drive:

A clue of what was to come:

Does this road look icy to you?

I think that the ice caught us all by surprise. And I'll just say that my son Caleb did a better job of driving through the icy parts than I did. And I could also say that my pants may need a little extra cleaning in the next wash!

We had just stopped for a group break, and had started back on the road again. We were the last car, and pulled onto the road, heading for the next turn going fairly slow since I had seen how are cars were sliding in the icy spots (Caleb had been driving up until now). Apparentlly, I wasn't going slow enough. The tires lost all grip to the road, and before I knew it, the car was going forwards but turned sideways, then turned almost clean around before the tires caught grip, and we were sliding toward the drop-off side of the road, the car being dead sidways again. I started braking, since we had slid through the icy spot, and now the tires were getting grip. We stopped about 2' from a low stone wall, that would have acted like a gaurd rail. Daniel and Ron in the car ahead had heard my wheels screeching, and backed up to see if we were OK, and we were, thank goodness. We drove even slower after that!

My hearty praise goes to all the drivers that negotiated the icy roads. Today was not a day for spirited driving! Everybody got through the route carefully and safely. It certainly was a beautiful day!

Nice flat red hood Steve - where did you ever find such a thing? ;) The car is really coming along.

Looks like a great time, sure hoped I could be be there, but the car is still being held hostage by the body shop...

Glad to hear that all the drivers, and cars, made it safe. I must admit I have never driven my Spider in ice or snow, but that is hard for any car, especially RWD. My car does ok in rain, but that is pretty rare her anyway.

Any run-ins with the law? Anyone, anyone? Before, during, after?

Nice ride, black ice is really scary so I am glad everyone made it through the trip. I hope to be there for the next ride.
