motorcycle muffler?

Has anyone adapted motorcycle muffler(s) onto a stock Fiat Spider 2.0L? Such as one from a Kawasaki C14. Those bikes sound great.

Or is there an off the shelf performance muffler from Pep Boys (Autozone, etc) that sounds great?

I know it is not possible to achieve this fantastic V6 sound:

I'll bet you could get a Supertrapp or a Vance & Hines slip-on that would give you some serious sound. Is your '80 FI or carb? If carb, then the tuneability of the Supertrapp, adding or deleting dics on the tail end, could get you not only great sound, but also best dyno setup.

Yea I just got el cheapo muffler system last year. I can barely hear my car.. thought of drilling some holes in that muffler!
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

I am going with side pipes I would like to find some that are black and a little smaller round I think they com in 3 or 4 inch I think they would sound good 8)

What a friend of mine did on his 328i was remove the muffler and attached a y pipe with two tips to give the illusion of a muffler. He still have the resonator and cat and now he has a deeper raspy sound with a lot of overrun crackling. It sound's great. I dunno how that would sound on a 4 banger though.

Bill,
Supertrapp is a brand of muffler, and they make ones for cars, atv's and bikes. Here is one for cars - as you can see, about as costly as an Ansa: http://www.supertrapp.com/product_secti ... p?CatID=63. They have stacks of metal discs that you can add more of to make it louder and have more top end but less back pressure, or reduce for quieter with better back pressure. Balanced for your engine setup, (we're talking mostly carb'ed engines here, where you can fiddle with jets, intake, air filter, etc),you can dial in the right mix of back pressure for good torque and free flow for top end power, along with a sound to suit your taste.
If it's just for the sound, and a bit more free flowing, with a FI engine you might just look at a Vance & Hines, which should be available in the right diameter pipe to slip onto the stock exhaust pipe. I can't recall the standard Spider exhaust pipe diameter, but I believe V&H come in 2, 2.25 and 2.5. They are pricey - you might search on ebay.
I'm not sure you would save much, if anything, over some of the other Fiat vendor's options that need no modification, however.

I tried a supertrapp years ago on my Race Fiat the sound was more like a bee hive then a muffler i messed with it a
bunch using the Discs to tune the exhaust never was impressed more like disappointed .

The Dino has 3 small mufflers per side (3 cylinders) to achieve this amazing sound , i don't
think a motorcycle muffler is going in the right direction . You may want to try a pre silencer
and Muffler .

I use a Supertrap on my Fiat and I am pleased with it, I took off an Ansa that I wasn’t happy with, to quiet.
I ran the Supertrap with and without a resonator and it defiantly needs the resonator and used a little bigger exhaust pipe to lower the tone.

Does the size of the pipe make a big difference with the tone. I would like to have a deep tone. I have So Cal Marks header and a magnaflow muffler. I was thinking of using either a 2" or 21/4" pipe. Do you think it would make a difference.

I would like to see pic's of the side pipes installed. If you guys have them. Please post pic's :mrgreen:

well i still have stock tail pipe so far interested to see where this conversation goes to. maybe like to hear a few you tube videos. different pipes.was going to tackle that issue in the spring. as far as side pipes. I have owned enough motorcycles to know not to put them on a low seated sports car. they look pretty cool but leave very nice scars. I have been very carefull over the years. around the bikes. but I was out in my buddy's 1930 Criss Craft (woody, barrel back) OUT OF my element (same as any passenger in a low seated sports car). and we had a fuel issue and I standing in the engine cock pit and touched my leg on the exhaust. that was 4 yrs ago i still have the scar.

When I first put it on I had the stock pipe and no resonator and it did sound different, so I put on a resonator and it sounded better, last winter when I rebuilt the motor I made a 2 inch exhaust system and moved the resonator further forward and it made a lot of difference in sound, both idle and acceleration. The car is in storage now or I would make a recording of the exhaust, I have a couple cars I am working on this winter when I am through with them I am bringing my Fiat home again for some more changes and I can record it then.

maybe that was the difference i ran a header with a pipe straight to the Supertrapp in the end the bolt or nut that held
the end cap which kept all the discs on came loose and fall off while doing about 70 mph i didn't bother trying to find
the parts that was the end of my supertrapp experiment . I liked the ideal of tuning the exhaust this is why i purchased
it to begin with .

I would like to hear yours someday when you can record the sound that would be cool ! :)
