MAG PAINT

I have probably asked this before but I want to know if anyone has painted a set of Cromadora mags before. MIne are dull grey and I want to paint them a more silver color...not chrome. Mine seem to have some sort of coating. What is the best way to paint them...is it just a simple matter of roughing them up, undercoating a couple of times and then painting?

Any ideas ??

I had my CD-3's glass beaded then powder coated. I think they look great now.

I'm waiting for the 72 to get out of the body shop. I've actually been saying that now for close to a year. Not sure if these or the reconditioned originals are going on the car. These did turn out nice though.

Did you have them clearcoated too? I had a set of CD30's blasted and powdercoated and all the crevices and imperfections show on the wheel. I'm wondering if I should have expected better.

Hope I'm not really hi-jacking the thred here but, Denise,I have not had them cleared yet. They were before and the stuff was a bear to get off when bead blasting..extra$$ per wheel. I'll take the camera to work and take a pic & post in another topic.

Thanks Fiasco and Narfire, Fiasco very cleverly done and a great outcome. After seeing both those pics, I believe I will get them soda blasted and grey primered, then lay on the silver.

I had some 13" Panasports given to me. I called the powdercoating place and they wanted $60 per wheel and they could only do one solid color. So that's more than I want to spend plus I want the centers black and leave the rim polished aluminum. A friend at work was telling me that painting aluminum wheels is tricky and the paint easily flakes off. So any recommendations on how to prep and the best way to ensure long lasting results?

I've painted several sets of aluminum wheels, including the turbo wheels on my car with no problems. If they are bare aluminum you might want to use a self etching primer such as this:

Otherwise, I usually just sand and prime the existing paint/powder coat and paint. By the way, I had some wheels blasted and powdercoated and they looked awful, I rejected two of the five the first time and 5 months later took them back again, because they were rusting. They redid them again, but I am going to paint them since they are still too rough.

Prep and finish magnesium or aluminium wheels with the same technique as any other metal part of the car. If you're uncertain as to the wheel's history, you are best off taking all the old finish off. I found that a combination of chemical and bead stripping worked best on my CD-3's. With these wheels, you'll find a green anodizing (similar to aircraft) at the bottom of it all. Still a lot of hand sanding with tiny scraps of sandpaper, though. You can use body filler on any non-structural blemishes. I like PPG products, so I went with epoxy primer and base-clear urethane. The color is Argent, used on most OEM "mag" wheels nowadays. Eastwood sells Argent in a rattle can, but the clear is essential IMO, to keep them looking good.
