Fiat Model Identification

IAP Website has a chart that matches the year and serial number of the car. What I was wondering is if this is accurate. I have seen two early Spiders recently that did not match year and serial number. In both cases the serial number was lower than the year, i.e. 1972 Spider should start at serial number 47032, but the serial number on this 1972 (registered as) is around 42000. IAP chart indicates that this should be a late production 1971. So what year is it (from a parts replacement point of view)?

I am sure you guys may have run into this before, please share your knowledge / experience.

I'm not sure where you can go to cross reference this i saw a site sometime back possible german 124 forum
that had something going on to try and track the number of Fiat Spiders still on the road no ideal the name
of it, they might have a list of Vins . Have you tryd the other Suppliers or forums Mira would have some
people who might know, there are some hard core Fiat 124 enthusiasts on here as well i bet someone will
have information on this .

the problem is that back in those years the Europeans didn't have specific model years like the US manufacturers. They made running changes that are reflected in the serial numbers

So if understand correctly, what you are saying is that for service / parts you would go by the serial number vs. the year registered. So for an early 1972, you may need to look at 1971 parts / specs. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

If you are ordering for a 71 or 72, they are basically identical so it shouldn't pose a problem.

The earliest 1971's had 1438 engines.

I suspect that the SN list is incorrect, as my son's 1970 BS (with dual lens side markers) is SN 25735.

It doesn't make sense that there were ~11000 1969's built, ~800 1970's, and ~25000 1971's. Could it be that the "1971" 1438's were actually 1970's? This would seem to add up correctly, though there were probably (as others have stated) a few late SN cars that were titled as the following model year.

Thankfully, parts for Spiders are (relatively) interchangeable.
