A most annoying ticking sound!
A most annoying ticking sound!
OK... so here's the question. Can anyone help me identify the damned annoying ticking sound coming from somewhere around the speedometer? I know what your thinking... it's the speedometer cable. And that would be a very good guess, just as it was my first guess. Hey, it's starts out slow and speeds up as the car gets faster, so that's a good guess, right? NOT. I replaced the speedo cable and I still have the noise. Not to bad when the top is down and my hearing is getting a little off as I get older, but this is the time of year here in southeast Georgia that I occasionally need to have the top up. Then it's driving me crazy. Any help would be appreciated before I just start ripping stuff out! John

I replaced my cable only to have it start making noise so I replaced it again. To eliminate the possibility simply unhook the speedo cable at the tranny and test drive. If sound is gone you either have a bent end on the cable or something is wrong with the speedo itself perhaps?
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

In just about every instance where I have experienced this annoying noise, it has been a bent inner cable.

Can you think of any reason why the speedometer would tick (and the needle vibrate) only at a certain speed? At 35 - 40 mph, my needles jumps around, then settles down again above that.
