aftermarket air cleaner

Post by kensmith »

I am looking for some cheap way to get a little more performance. I have a stock air cleaner on my 1978 124 spider. Is there some kind of aftermarket air cleaner that will help? I am in California so I need to be able to switch back to stock for smog check time.

I sell the rectangular aftermarket filters. We have several customers that bring their cars in at smog check time with a box of oem parts for us to install

Thanks Mark,

That's what I want to do. Get a little extra performance with some cheap aftermarket parts but be able to put the original stuff back on for smog check. As you know, California is getting harder and harder on smog.

For those of you not cursed with smog inspections and wanting to keep the original "look", drill as many 3/8" holes as possible on the underside of the OEM housing (outboard of the filter element). All the flow, all the "giant sucking sound".

I BOUGHT A 2" TALL CHROME AIR CLEANER FROM ADVANCE AUTO FOR $30 AND CUT A 6" ON CENTER OUT OF THE ORIGINAL AIR CLEANER AND MOUNTED IT TO THE CHROME ONE RECESSED ABOUT 1/4". WORKS GREAT LOOKS GREAT AND IT'S A REUSABLE WASHABLE HI PERF FILTER.. PLUS YOU GET A NICE THROATY THROTTLE SOUND

You can also just look on the Products page of Mark's website. http://allisonsautomotive.com/products.html

He lists the air cleaner on that page, and it says it comes with all the hardware needed.

Not sure what carb I have and he said a few days ago I would need to know carb information. I think it's the original carb that came with the car, 1978, 124, 1.8L so I want to make sure it will work. Has the original air cleaner on it now.

I could not find any 32 ADFA on the base but it looks just like it and the book does say it should be a 32 ADFA.
