KYB dominates Google

Post by kensmith »

I did a Google search "1978 Fiat 124 Spider shocks" and almost all topics came up with KYB. I have a stock spider and it needs new shocks. Front end has a little boat action on the freeway bumps. I don't race, just Sunday drives. Is KYB shocks/struts the way to go?

Many would advise against gas shocks, citing excess strain on the car's structure. Others think they are fine. No one, however, seems to have any hesitation about Koni shocks.
Check also the usual vendors. I believe regular, OEM style shocks are also available.

You should be able to find Monroe sensa-track shocks at your local napa. They are good shocks, and cheaper than the KYB's.

My experience was that the Monroes were cheaper than the KYBs if I bought locally, but the best deal I could find overall was on KYBs from Just Suspension on Amazon. $81 total for two fronts and two rears with free shipping. Takes about 2 weeks to get them though.

Chris,

Do you know how many miles are on them? Can you email photos to me? You didn't like them?

Thanks,

Not trying to step on any toes, but the white shocks are Gas-a-Just and are a high pressure shock that is not recommended for a spider. The gr2 is a silver shock that is a low pressure shock that is what most spider owners use.

The gas-a-just shocks have busted through the top stock tower on many spiders.

I'm not looking for stiff shocks, just good shocks for normal driving.

That's the type of feedback to which I was referring in my first post. I just didn't know that KYB made both high and low pressure shocks.

Hi!

I have installed Monroe sensa-track shocks on my 74, and are very satisfied with them. Got them cheap from a vendor in US, and even with shipping they got cheaper than the cheapest I could get in Norway :-))

WOW, that's a great price for 4 shocks and includes free shipping. Kind of worries me they can sell for that amount and still be a good shock.

It's right at $20 a shock, which is a little less, but still in the ballpark of the prices for these at brick-and-mortar shops. Pretty much anything you order through Amazon that's over $25 comes with free shipping. My guess is just that the low-overhead of an online only business allows them to undercut the physical store prices. The downside is waiting 2 weeks to get your stuff.

I found the Monroe Sensa-trac at Napa on-line are about the same price. Are they about the same, better, worse than KYB?

I purchased a complete set Koni's for my car for about $100 each. Compared to $130 each from the well known vendors. Import Replacement Parts located in Washington State. Only problem..Took 3 months to recieve them! Was told to be a delay at the Koni facility in Holland, and not IRP itself. Otherwise, am very excited to complete the installation. (So far, only the rear's were replaced due to a continuing delay in receiving the front pair!)
