Roll on paint?

Has anyone ever tried this method...?

Seems like the most hands on and cheapest way to do it, after I'm content with my body work, I'm going to give it a try, so if I'm the first, I'll make sure to take lots of pic's and detailed captions on it. Ah who am I kidding, I'll do that anyways.

20 years ago, I painted my old VW on one hot summer day with just a foam roller and black enamel. I did not sand after. The results were quite acceptable (no bubbles, no runs, just a rather serious orange peel texture). If that Falcon is a 5-foot paint job, then mine was a 10-footer. I sold it on a rainy day, which gave it a glossy, mile-deep shine.



I realize the small picture doesn't really show much, but it wasn't bad. I could imagine that if you put the time into wet-sanding and polishing, it could be acceptable. But Rustoleum? Maybe I'd chose something else.

I used to use a similar process for painting my race cars. I would use a foam brush to lay the RUSTOLEUM on, then use a small foam roller to smooth it out. It really is amazing how smooth Rustoleum will dry. There was no confusing my paint jobs for quality body shop paint jobs, but my cars looked much, much better than some of the sprayed on paint jobs that were out there, and from several feet away most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. (Of course, when you're going as fast as I used to, all people see is one big blur, anyway.)

I'm not sure I'd try it on my Spider, but I did have an old Chevy Lumina with peeling paint that I almost talked my wife into letting me paint.........

If I'm going to spend the time and money on bodywork, I think I'd rather get a decent paint job that will last for several years....just my opinion.

$57 worth of paint (Westmarine Topside Marine Boat Paint, Duplicolor wheel paint, Duplicolor truck bed liner), 1 week, some wet sanding between coats, came out great for an inexpensive job, but it's for a track rat...

No need to waste paint. I'm getting proficient in replacing body parts. She doesn't give them enough chance to rust.

First coat

Second coat, was surprised at how flat the first one went on, there was only orange peal in 2 small areas, and only had 2 runs. A little wet sanding, some sun, and second coat was put on, this one really filled in the color a lot. I'm kinda scared that I went to dark, but the plan is to do the rocker panels black, as well as redoing the hood humps. My bumpers are also black so, it might be getting over powered with meanness . I'm hoping the pen strip and the chrome will really make the car pop, but I think with the top down and that amazingly perfect blue interior I have, it will really look good.

I broke the screen on my camera today moving some junk, so I couldnt turn the flash on, so tomorrow morning I'm sure the gloss will be a lot more apparent.

quality, yeah as the coats layer up the gloss gets better and the reflections deeper. As long as you cut the paint thin enough orange peel shouldn't even appear, that's where I got sloppy, until the last 2 coats where I doubled up on thickness I had near flawless reflection in the paint, if you have the time, take it as nothing makes the roll on job better than time and thin coats.

What kind of paint are you guys using? It looks good.

To be honest I haven't thinned it at all, but I've put a lot of pressure on my roller and followed it with a foam brush to pop any bubbles(hardly ever happens) and get in the crevices with it too. It is going on thin, and flat with the amount of pressure I'm using, on a 3inch roller. I was planning on thinning the later coats but at this rate with this method and these results, I'm not really thinking its necessary. 4 coats and I might be a happy camper.

As for what kind of paint, High Performance Protective Enamel - RustOleum - Smokey Gray

Whats your guys thoughts on some metal flake additive?
Black or White pen stripe...?

Looks good! Will you be clear coating it? Or will it be just polished?

Do they make clear coat in a quart, or do you think buying 3 spray cans would do the trick?
But polishing is on its way for sure.

Get it by the quart. Your doing a good job that way. Maybe you could use a foam brush. I did mine with a foam brush when I put on MasterSeries. It looked like it was sprayed.
