Windshield frame installation 1980 Spider

Post by sigkadetm »

Does any one have instructions about replacing the windshield frame. What kind of sealant to use? What are the brackets for on the bottom near the cowl. Any info would be appreciated.

If your gasket is still good and you are just replacing the frame due to rust or damage, you can actually replace the frame leaving the windshield glass and gasket in place without breaking the "seal" of the gasket on the body. This is the only place that the gasket should have "sealant". If you are replacing the gasket, get urethane sealant from a glass shop for the bottom of the gasket/body. Sealant is not used on the frame itself. The frame is only secured to the body via the 2 bolts on each side in the door jamb. The front cowl helps to "push up" and "seat" the bottom of the gasket to the body.

So on the bottom of the gasket channel use the sealant. The outside flap rest on top of the cowl. The bigger flap goes between the cowl and the sealant channel. What are the two clamps for. I have one on each side, on the outside of the channel.

Do you have a pic of the clamps you mention? I'm having a hard time picturing what you're talking about.
