light blue '84 pininfarina Azzurra: the paint has been out in the weather for too long. This is a car I am looking at, but do not yet own. I think a good work-over with rubbing compound can bring back a good amount of the original paint, but the trunk and hood have light surface rust, a bit of one body panel has some bubbling/flaking, and there is light rust along the rear edge of the doors (right along the rear vertical seam). The interior blue paint not exposed to the weather is great.
Short of stripping the car and having a total re-paint, could anyone suggest some ideas for getting the car into stabilized shape until I can swing a paint job (and until I am sure that, mechanically, this car is a keeper)?
Are the original paint codes for the light blue Azzurra Spiders still available?
Is that blue shade a difficult or complicated color and finish to work with/replicate?
"Azzurra" Blue (code #473)" is all I have found so far on this color, and I am assuming there was only one shade of "Azzurra light blue" in '84.....?

If the entire car is in poor shape, or if the color is a metallic one, there is little you can do to get a good match other than find the correct paint and have it properly applied.
But if it is a matter of touch up or, as in the case of my Spider, the problem is localized to the lower front cowl where the original paint is chipped or peeling do to the fact that it was applied over the plastic, textured, anti-rust, coating, there is an answer (and it may surprise you). Simply take a decent sized peeling piece of the paint to your local hardware/paint shop and have them color analyze it and mix a can.
I did this on my Spider and the results are more than acceptable. Since that part of the car is textured anyway (and in the case of my 32 year old car also 'textured' by repeated stone hits), I simply applied two coats with a foam brush. Close examination mighty reveal what I've done, but it does not stand out at all to even an admiring viewer.
I used the same paint to 'fix' the chips in the door edges, etc.
Obviously this is for a runner (but even a nice runner!), not a 'show car.'

agreed with the above. if your paint is in bad shape, the touch up paint will be new and won't match at all (tried this personally). i have ordered paint from http://www.touchuppaintonline.com to repaint the whole car for under $150 and it turned out great. just couldn't get over paying someone $2500 to do it...

edit: looking again at the car in question, the paint code sticler is still on the underside of the trunk lid, and it reads, "876 azzurro met."

I've been looking for some time for the correct color, I have yet to find it. The conclusion I have reached is that short of having it analyzed and matched in a good shop I think I'd rather find a close match in a stock modern car color so that it will be easier to match later in the event that (lets all whisper it...) someone else inflicts damage on my car. I'll let you know what I settle on, I just know that the red has to go.
