The PO of my car (early 80 spider) stuck a strip of "chrome" plastic over the inside mirror. Nice idea but the thing made me nauseous to look into.
After I peeled the strip off I saw why he did it. The inside was filthy dirty. I saw here that the mirror came apart and could be cleaned so I gave it a try. It came apart very nicely but now that I have put it back together I find that it will not stay in either the day or night position, it just flops back and forth.
I saw a post that mentioned a spring inside but I didn't see anything when I took it apart. Must have slipped past me somehow when I wasn't looking.
Could anyone describe this spring and where it goes? Maybe if I knew a little about it I could come up with a sub.
Thanks

Re: Flopping Mirror
i know this is not the answer to your question, but i have heard that Vick Auto sells replacements for the guts of those mirrors. i think you must call, as these are not listed in their catalogue.
Re: Flopping Mirror
Thanks Mike. You're right it's not what I was looking for but it may be the solution.
I also found a couple of mirrors on ebay that aren't too bad if it comes to that.

Re: Flopping Mirror
if you go with the Evil Bay mirror, don't be surprised if they are clouded....
the mirrors can be disassembled and cleaned!!

Re: Flopping Mirror
Was browsing and saw this old post. My interior mirror vibrated so badly I saw six cars at a time behind me. The day/night feature was useless, as you described.
Went to a Fiat parts warehouse near me in S. NJ and bought a replacement (used) mirror frame for $20-25. Was surprised how easily it comes out of the car. The warehouse owner said once the day/night is broken it can't be fixed.
I disassembled the mirror when I got home, cleaned it, reassembled it using the original glass and mirror and it is in the car working well, day or night.

Re: Flopping Mirror
One other thing...
I found no spring in the mirror. The day/night is controled by a small bar that runs the length of the interior behind the mirror support. It operates on a cam principle. It is essential the mirror is re-assembled just right or the day/night will not function.

Re: Flopping Mirror
Thanks Rod. I gave up on my original mirror a while ago. I bought the mirror from Fiasco's wrecked spider. Figured I'd I help to finance a new one.
