Brake Issue

Post by mkmskm »

The brakes on my car were crap when I got it. It sat a lot and its only got 41,000 miles on it. The master cylinder was bad, one wheel cylinder was leaking, the rear calipers were all but locked... Anyway its got 4 new calipers, new master cylinder, new hoses and the brakes are there now but still dead feeling. I can't lock it up. Bad booster? On the good news I got a half axle to replace the stripped threads in the rear on one hub and the Weber rebuilt so it doesn't shoot gas out the accelerator pump so its getting there. It runs great now. Still working on that stopping thing.

Did you replace or bypass the rear compensator? I have made great improvements on my braking system. Mine stops pretty well but like yours I can't "lock it up" I have eliminated the compensator, two new rear calipers. I put new rotors on and that really helped. I need to do the same to the rear, I bet that will improve it further. Did you replace the rotors? They are shipped new at minimum thickness.
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

Yes the rotors are new and the compensator was checked for leaks and its working fine. Having never driven a Spider with good brakes, what is good brakes? I would assume I should be able to lock this little sucker up?

stopping distances increase once the wheels lock up

Correct, but I just meant this in terms of I don't have enough pedal force to get to that point. Heck, my old heavy '51 Chevy can lock the wheels on its drum brakes. The Spider is just mushy.
