I hear ya... my story recently is thus.... went to the BEST top of the line restore guy here in So. Cal. and was quoted 10K minimum no matter the car or job. i then went back to my mechanic and used his guy who quoted him $3,500 - $3,800. After the job (nice one!) the shop informed my mechanic no more jobs at that price. Add another 1K he said from here on out. The next Alfa my mechanic sent him paid that. It is tough to swallow but expact to put in about double on what the car will be worth..

Unless you do what I'm doing. I'm going to paint it myself. This is my first restoration and first paint job. Let's see how it turns out. I hope to have all the bodywork done in about two to three weeks.
That is such a pretty car Denise!

I'm right there with ya Brady. For me, I just can't see spending that kind of money for a car I only paid 1k for. So, I just bought a nice big fat compressor and I'm going to have a go at it myself this Fall. I'm sure it won't turn out looking like a 10k job but hopefully with the right prep work I can get it presentable.

I just found out how much the paint is going to cost. They said for colors like red's and blue's cost the most. After all the back and forth with colors. Price does effect what color to choose. I'm choosing graphite (gray) which are cheaper. Still it will cost me about $550 without shipping or taxes. This place is close so I won't have to pay shipping. I hear it's really expensive to ship paint. I already had the primer. So that isn't within that price nor all the other items you need to do a paint job.

Does that include your reducers and hardeners? I've got over $1000 in my base and clearcoats. An epoxy primer, then a building primer also adds to the cost, as well as paper and lots of tape. Reds are more expensive and they are also more transparant than other colors so you'll need more coats for complete coverage.

yes it included one gal of reducer, 3 Qts of paint, 1 gal clear coat, activator. I'll get the paper and tape from Home depot. I already had the epoxy primer.

These guys sell some really inexpensive paint. I haven't bought any and wouldn't reccomend it for a restoration, but for painting a beater or your first paint job it might be worth a shot. http://www.smartshoppersinc.com/

I think you may have meant tight on money, cheap just sounds so inappropriate.

Some of paints on that site are well known. It makes me wonder if I'm paying to much. If I get it from this guy. I'll save on shipping. I know shipping is going to cost me an arm and at least half a leg.

Thanks for all the advice and support.

I've nearly convinced myself that I'm going to paint it myself. I spent last week skim coating the doors and fenders and blocking them out again. I checked with the local paint suppliers for PPG and Akzo Nobel (Sikkens and Lesonal) and it does look like it will run about $1000 or slightly more for epoxy primer, urathane primer-filler, base coat, clear and all the necessary reducers and hardeners. My biggest issue is with time. With the 45-60 min/ 3-4 days a week that I'm able to work on the project, it will be about 6.4 years before it is done  .

I don't mind paying decent money for quality. No, I'm not interested in the $98 paint job . I bumped into a guy who owns a body shop in a nearby town and he confirmed my belief that many paint and body shops don't want to work on older cars because they take a lot of time and they don't pay as well as insurance jobs. So the one shop was probably bidding high because he didn't really won't to mess with it. I will keep checking with other shops.

Denise, your spider is beautiful. I love that these new paint systems are so durable, looking great for decades. I tell you what, if your husband wants to waste some winter months blocking-out and shooting another '72 spider, I can get the car to W-S. I would definitely trust someone who cares for these little cars as much as I do.

One point brought up was color. I have two inspiration cars, one red the other white (cream) with red interior of course. The white would be cheaper and more forgiving for the bodywork. What does everyone think?

kmac33's (Kevin's) beautiful '74.

Unsure who's spider this is or I would give credit. Any idea what paint code that would be? 212,233 or 236?
