square hole in fender?

Anyone know why this these square holes are in the front fenders? Has anyone blocked them off?

Bill,
The big square holes? some say they're for air flow for the brakes or original holes for a blinker set-up but I don't think anyone really knows why they exist except to run the blinker wire through. There have been allot of threads on filling them in though. Do a search and you find all kind of options.

Thanks for the replies. My new fiberglass fender doesn't have the hole. So I am going to fill in the other side. I like the way it looks without the square holes.
