Custom Dash
Custom Dash
Today I was messing around with a dash like everyone likes. I got it shaped now and thinking of making a mold of it. I might make one out of carbon fiber for my car. Not sure yet which route I'm taking.
Let me know what you think. Here's plenty of pic's.

Looks great! I am a big fan of that dash "everyone likes." I would be willing to pay good money for one of those in wood. Keep up the good work man!
Re: Custom Dash
Very Nice! You should have one of the smaller gauges between the Speedo & Tach.
IE: Speedo, Water, Tach, Oil Pres., Fuel & Restored Clock

So that means you're included under the "everyone" category?NebraskaSpider wrote:Looks great! I am a big fan of that dash "everyone likes." I would be willing to pay good money for one of those in wood. Keep up the good work man!
I also am too though, very sleek looking.

Oh yes...I am part of everyone. I am very impressed by the skill involved with putting something like that together. I've tried my hand at word working with mixed results and must say, Brady's dash looks great.

Well, when the boss got home last night. I showed her the dash and she said it needed more shape. So I couldn't wait to shape it up this morning. Here it is done. Let me know what you think.
Re: Custom Dash
It's Daytona Blue, the car in my sig is my car though, my father and I painted it last summer. It's pretty close to the color of those 350z's. Nissan has a "Nissan Daytona Blue" color, but mine was just "Daytona Blue" probably the same. I saw a picture of a car here on the forums painted this same color although perhaps a *tad* darker than mine came out being. The car's almost an electric blue, depends a lot on the lighting.azygoustoyou wrote:Hey Nick,
Is your car the one painted the 350Z color?

Re: Custom Dash
Brady,
The dash is looking great. Are you going to forgo a glove box or figure out a way to work that into the design?
When I redid mine, I contemplated going solid, contoured with no glove box, but decided I needed to keep the glove box for sunglasses and iPod.
This is what I ended up with.

That looks good Kevin. I asked the wife and she thought to leave it off. It could be added easily. I was looking at my dash and it really looks like crap. I might just go with So Cal Marks fiberglass dash. I might do a couple of these and sell them though.
Would anyone be interested and what do you think would be a fair price. I could do them out of mahogony or something similar. I would let you cut the holes. This way you could put them where you want them. I would just do the shaping.

what material did you use for the dash? I used a carbon fiber sheeting for mine but yours really looks great.kmac33 wrote:Brady,

Re: Custom Dash
Thank you!
I used phenolic as my base material - it will never warp, change shape or delaminate (just not as easy to work with as wood). I used mahogony veneer stained black as my finish material. The pieces were then clear coated with automotive urethane. I'm very happy with the way the dash looks in bright sunlight - which was my goal.
But after seeing Brady's "creation" I think I may be doing another version soon. I've got a couple of ideas in my head now on how to have the one piece contour with a "hidden" glove box that retains easy access. By the way, you did a great job on your restoration! I enjoyed going through the album.
Brady,
I may actually be interested in getting one in mahogony - that would make it a lot easier for me to try what I'm thinking about doing - my wood working skills are pretty limited!

The only practice I had really was making the bumperettes and totem pole.
