Pulled the head and the brake booster/MC today to get at the firewall tear issue and head gasket change.
I believe the lads at fiat first installed a clutch cable into the fork above the pedal and then built the car around it. What a fiddly time consuming thing, and I was just trying to get the thing out. Going to test the patience putting it all back together.

Unless they had a trained monkey working at Turin, the cable must surely have been fitted to the pedal before the pedal box was assembled. I would love to know how our cars were assembled, especially these tricky, time consuming jobs like the heater box and pedal assembly.
I have a 1964 Mini Cooper S as well as a couple of Fiats and the brake and clutch pedals on these are connected directly to the master cylinders with push rods and clevis pins which are located inside a boxed section of the firewall structure. How they fitted them at the factory without holding up the assembly line for a hour at a time is beyond me.
