Windshield Wiper Arm

Post by yap123 »

Howdy,

I tried to remove the wiper arm by removing the nut off the stem coming out. But, that didn't work and now the nut won't screw back in properly because the arm has a metal tab interfering with lining up the nut and stem threads.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Clint

Clint,

Do you mean you were able to remove the retaining nut without removing the arm that holds the wiper blade?

if so, that tab is the item you want to pry with a flat blade screwdriver to remove the wiper arm from the spindle.

or, are you referring to the internal (under the cowl) arms that control the mechanism? that linkage requires the cowl to be unscrewed from the body to gain access. http://www.international-auto.com/index ... 82&noapp=1

Mike,

I was able to unscrew, but not remove, the retaining nut because the arm is still on.

That tab, do I push it down toward the car or away from the car to remove the arm?

Thanks,
Clint

pull the tab outward and wiggle the lower end of the arm while pulling up and it should come off.

I've always used a flat blade screwdriver to push down on the tab. Then, at the same time (as FIATER points out) lift up on the arm with your other hand.

Should come off with a minor tug.

No tools required to install, merely press back in place with the heel of your hand.

I lifted the tab outward/away from the arm and wiggled it out.

It looks good without the wiper blades and decided to leave them off. I don't drive in the rain here in So. Ca. and my motor doesn't work either.

Does anyone have a suggested cap to cover the tip of the arms?

Thanks,
Clint

or you can remove the whole mechanism and plug the holes in the cowl with these:

I know you can buy them at Lowe's.

now thats what i was talking about. what would be really cool would be to modify the cowl cover to accept a single wiper arm down the middle, euro style

hard to get a single wiper to work on a wide, short windshield
