MSD box and EFI?

Post by boxdogracing »

I'am trying to install an MSD 6BTM box on my 83 spider. After several attempts I can't get the EFI to work with it connected, I have tried both the magnetic pickup and the white wire method of wiring, same issue. The MSD manual lists a tach/fuel adapter as needed on some cars (makes sense), but of course they don't list fiat and there are three different adapters they sell for various different applications. Has anyone else put an MSD box on a EFI spider and made it work, if so how? It would not matter what MSD box as they all wire and work the same.

you will definitely need a tach adapter. The MSD puts out a square wave and you need a pulse signal for the efi and tach. I thought MSD only had one adapter.

As it turns out they make three part #"s 8910, 8920, and 8910EIS. Any additional info on how to find the correct one would be greatly appreciated.

I called MSD today they said "try 8920 first" I didn't really like the sound of that. But I went ahead and ordered one, we'll see.. I'll let you guys know if it works.

Do some searching over on the mirafiori forum. I did some searching a couple of years ago to find out which model I'd need and I think I found it there. Make sure to search the archives, not just the general forum. I didn't end up making the conversion, so don't even ask what I found out....

Received the 8920 today.. NOTHING!! Called MSD the guy on the other end said "why would you buy that one" So I guess the guy I talked to the first time knew nothing. That turned out to be money wasted, anyway now I have the 8910 on order. That only leaves the 8910EIS. I'am starting to think the EFI will only work with MSD if I do the Meagasquirt setup, as it seems no one has done it. I'll keep pressing on, if I get something to work I will let you know.

Don't even bother with MSD if you go megasquirt. you do NOT need 6 sparks for every ignition event. all it takes is one spark, not 6. just go with the EDIS setup. :)

Megasquirt is something I'am seriously looking into, but I still need to to do a massive amount of research on how to set it up fuel maps, injector specs/compatibility, and on and on. The Idea behind the MSD was primarily the boost retard of the 6BTM box. Does the EDIS have boost retard capability? If I can get the MSD to work I'am only a short time away from 6-8psi of boost. That is probably as far as I can safely go with the factory ECU, then the plan is to upgrade the EFI.

I believe Denise has an MSD box on her car, send her a pm and ask which tach adapter she has

yes the edis has boost retard ability... it a has a fully mappable ignition.also has rev-limiter by way of spark retard, and a bunch of other cool stuff.

8910 thats the answer! now it works. So now I'am on to fuel line pluming for the additional regulator and some pretesting to verify I can get ignition and fuel close for boost. Then I need to fab a turbo manifold, and a few lose ends. This should be fun.

you should go ahead and make two manifolds... sell me the one you dont like. :)

I'm running an 8920 adapter but mine is carbed. I know it's too late, but I found good information on the MSD site under troubleshooting. Here's what I found for your car:
