Tube Bumper Modify Question? Removing one front tube bar...

Post by Fiat88 »

I'm planning on removing the bottom tube from the front bumper and just using the top tube, then painting it black. I've seen one member do it and it looks nice + less weight. My question is how do you cut off the welds? Never did this before and most likely gonna have to bring it down to a shop, what would they use blow torch or grinding wheel? And do you think I could still use the same mounting brackets on the bumper or is it best have have some kind of new mounts welded on. Thx.

Since your painting it. A torch would work. It would be a lot faster than the cut off wheel. They use the same mounts.

Buy a angle grinder and a cut off wheel, not as quick as the plasma cutter, but does a fine job.

I'm on my way!

I'm just gonna bring it down to the local garages by City Field via the VW Golf. Will take some pics of the outcome.

Thanks. Not bad. It would be nice to see a whole bunch of Spiders lined up with different bumpers to see which looks the best. Also, any photos or how he did the rear bumper?

I don't think he did anything with the rear but I'm not 100% sure.

Haven't cut the front bars yet but will be doing so soon. One shop said $75 so I guess I have to pay around that but right now I have a painting question. I primed and painted the rear bumpers black using a duplicolor black spray can but I'm wondering do you guys think I should clear-coat them too? Thx.

If you do you may should stick with the same type and brand of paint. It may help it keep its shine longer.

I think with it painted satin black and pulled tight to the body it could work!??

as far as cutting , I used my 3in air zip wheel....it was a piece of cake...if you have a small high speed grinder with a cut off wheel it can be done in 20 min.(take $75 and buy a tool  )

I would buy a cut-off wheel and do it myself but I live in a co-op with seperate multiple attached garages. I'm guessing it would make a lot of sparking! So, its not the ideal or safest working environment for that kind of work.

did a little work to the bumper, ground off the rust, drilled the mounting shocks and gave it a test fit.....
