1969 Spider
1969 Spider
I have a 1969 124 Spider and I was wondering if there were multiple options for the motor and carb that came in that year and if so what they were. If there was only one motor and carb combination which one is that, I have heard alot of conflicting information as to what I have in my car as I just recently got it from a friend and still havent had a chance to do that much work on it.

Only one motor, a 1438 with a single weber and a 4 or 5 speed trans.

Re: 1969 Spider
Just as he said that is the only combination for that year.
In 1970 the 1608 became available as an option and later as standard. In Europe the 1608 was available with twin downdraft 40 IDFs. The distributor moved from the block to the side of the exhaust cam housing. The 1608 was later replaced by the 1592 and later still by the 1749 (1800) and finally the 1995 (2.0).

Re: 1969 Spider
The easiest way to tell if you still have a 1438 is to look at the front crank pulley. If it has an aluminum cover (aka centrifical oil filter), it's a 1438.

Re: 1969 Spider
Conflicting data every where when it comes to cars. I always heard the 1608 wasnt available til 71. some 71,s had a 1438. I recently bought an old magazine article that states this to be the case. I would love to see something that says otherwise. Never seen a 70 with a 1608 and never seen a 71 with a 1438. Not really that important, just my experience with what I have seen and heard thru the years. U S cars only.

Re: 1969 Spider
I haven't seen a 71 with a 1438 either, but another thing that never made sense was with the long taillamps on the 71 and most 72s. Supposedly, if the car came with a 1608 it had the long taillamps. I had one 72 with the short ones but it had a 1608 motor.

Re: 1969 Spider
I have always been told 71 was the only year for long tail lights. My first car back in 78 was a 71. I recently have heard that some 72,s had them but have yet to see this set up in person or verified in a pic. Thats not to say it dosent exist.

Re: 1969 Spider
DOH! I was having a VW moment, their 1.8l engine had a displacement of 1749 vs the 1756 for Fiat. Thanks for catching that.BEEK wrote:1749= 1756CCkmead wrote:Just as he said that is the only combination for that year.

Re: 1969 Spider
Rey, mine is a 72 with the long lights. There are a few differences in the 71 and 72s. One is there are no engine compartment lamps in the 72 and there are no directional arrows on the dash for the defrost vents on the 71:spiderrey wrote:I have always been told 71 was the only year for long tail lights. Back to the original topic. I found an old factory service manual for the 124ac models. It shows the carb to be a 34DFH for the early type and the 34 DFH/4 for the later type. Any specs you need from this book, just give me a holler.

Re: 1969 Spider
The tough part about having a car with a specific motor is proving it came that way. Thanx 4 the info.

Re: 1969 Spider
Only one in the US. Weber 34 DFH, there is a possibility of it being a DHSA. From a rebuild kit standpoint they are the same. I have never had trouble getting a kit for my 1970 1438.
