Painting Plastic Timing Belt cover, what to use?

Post by Fiat88 »

I want to paint my grease stained timing belt cover, what kind of spray paint have you guys used to get a durable finish. I have some SEM Plastic prep spray and Sands Free left over from my lower console refinishing. Thx.

Krylon Fusion is made for plastic, I've also heard the krinkle paint works.

Will check into that, just wondering if it will stand up to the engine bay temps, though. Thx.

I've painted a couple for the same reason. Started with cleaning/scrubbing with brake cleaner, then sandable primer, then "Plasticote" paint in the colour you want then a couple coats of clear. So far stands up well and the oil that finds its way onto the outside wipes up easy.

Another paint that I have been using for things like fan housing, inside the grill area and suspension parts is the spray can bed liner. It is tough, and can be applied in different textures so hides a lot of sins like nicks and old rust damage. I also used it on my spoiler after rebuilding it from four busted pieces. Another one I have used is the European stone guard that is quite fine and can be feathered to zero. I used this under my wiper plenum. It is rubber and helps in sound deadening. Both available from Napa and similar stores

I just recently did this to mine. I cleaned it thoroughly then prepped with xylol or alcohol. I then used clear adhesion promoter which is a primer, followed by paint for auto plastics, both from Autozone. The up side, a very solid finish that wipes clean easily. The downside, only 3 color choices where I bought mine: black, white, tan and all 3 gloss. I used black gloss but would have preferred a satin. The engine has only about 45 min of run time since I've done this so I will keep you posted on durability.

Couldn't find the Fusion Paint in yellow locally so I bought Duplicolor Acrylic Paint. First I cleaned it really good, then filled a hole in with JB Weld ,then scuffed it up with fine sandpaper, then sprayed SEM Plastic Prep, then SEM Sands Free, then SEM Primer(Best Primer I've used next to Wurth!), then gave it a few light coats then one heavy coat with the Duplicolor stuff. Just gotta install it, I'm gonna have to take the alt. belt off to get the bottom section in, right? :D
