and the fun continues!

Hey guys hows it going ? I have finally been able to enjoy driving this car for the last month without having to work on it. Oh Ive done a few things but none mechanical.

Im down to my last noise!! oh what a special day it is. Once this noise goes away she will be a showroom drive.

Help me solve this last mystery!

The mystery noise happens when i apply the brakes. Sounds like crunching steel. lol that must be bad. Its not really a clanking but like a crunch which makes 2-4 noises each sounding like metal with a lot of torque on it and then releasing it) Its hard to explain. When i release the brake it makes the noise again. Like the pressure is relieved somewhere. Its most definitely coming from the front. I think drivers tire. I have removed both calipers 2 twice to inspect and make sure its seated right. ( Since the noise occurs when braking i thought the caliper maybe moving. I do believe its all put together right. on both front wheels.

The front sway bar i just recently retightened.. it is tight and makes no noise when i dangle from it.

I just installed new tie rods. the car was jacked up (in droop) when i tightened them I dont believe they are binding. I suppose they could be though. But when i back out of my driveway i hear a metal clicking noise.. stress on steel somewhere. Without pushing on brakes i hear this noise. I thinking the two maybe related or the same problem. and may not be brake related.

When i go reverse fast and brake it stops perfectly with no crunching or other noises. Only when backing out of my driveway at first will it make the popping noises once it starts rolling.

when parked the brakes make no noise when pushed.. only when stopping.

Thank you Fiat Geniuses for any advice.

Do you still have the thin sheet metal protectors on the brakes? One could be bent and making contact. I took mine off.

the only thing sheet metal things came with my new front rotors. looks like a 6 inch long peice of sheet metal which turns into a two pronged fork on each end. I have no idea where they would go.. they dont attach to the pads from what i can tell. And my car had nothing like this during removal of the old brakes. WHat the heck are these things ?

Those things are pad retainers. My parts book shows the retainer for 227mm rotors but not for the 257mm rotors. The pads are a different setup for the larger rotor. Which do you have?

the pad springs go under the pads, on the caliper bracket. Without them the pads will move around in the bracket and will be quite noisy

It's most likely the brake pad springs. Also check the caliper springs. There should be 2, one on each side of the caliper holder. It's quite easy to have one of them on top of your caliper and not both under it. That would make a lot of noise as well.

thanks for the advice. Socal you said that that part went under the brake pad. im guessing you mean the backside of it ? the frontside would have it between the brake pad and the rotor.
I tried like hell to get it on the backside and it really doesnt fit or stay.

As far as the rotors. they are from IAP 14.00 each cheaper rotors. Im not sure of the MM
Ill try IAP for a new set of springs. thanks again guys.
