Some things...

Post by meman124 »

Hi,
I have to do some work on my 69 AS and need some expert input:

1. the car pulls to the right when i brake. Funny enought, it doesn't always do that. (the wheel turns)
What can this be? When drinving normally, she runs perfectly straight.
2. I want to check and change the oil of the gearbox and diff, but cannot get the bolts loose :( any ideas on how to get them loose without damage?
3. Are there any points that need greasing? I have a service manual, but cannot find any... i suspect that this type of car needs grease, ...

thanks for helping...

Hmm... good questions.

1. Might be the brake rotor, caliper, brake hoses, pads, and even the hard lines. Possibly needs a good bleeding
2. You could try a cheater bar or put the wrench on and tap gently with a hammer and that might pop them.
3. The wiper arm linkage under the front cowl. Other than that follow the noise :D

I hope this helps

Hey Matt, you forgot the master cylinder and brake fluid.

1. Your brake pull will most likely be the left caliper that is begining to stick and does not close when you press the brake pedal. If that is the case, only your right caliper is braking and that is why it pulls to the right. Rebuild kits a cheap and rebuilding the calipers is a piece of cake. Just be sure that you soak the bleeder screws with penetrating oil so that they don't break off.
2. I would not attempt to use a cheater bar on the trans and diff drain/fill plugs, they will round off for sure. Again, soak them with penetrating fluid overnight if possible and make sure to use a 6 point box end wrench, only then lightly tap with a hammer, the sudden impact will help to break it loose.
3. "Follow the noise", really? Have you ever been under one of these cars Matt? Most universal joints in the drive shaft have zerk fittings, there are two u-joints in our driveshafts, some aftermarket ball joints also have grease fittings, and there is also a grease fitting on the splined part of the driveshaft that is connected to the guibo(rubber doughnut). Those are all the ones i can remember off the top of my head.

Meman, bad tie rod ends can also cause the pull left or right. If you do not know the age of the tie rods, replace them. Buy the complete rods with ends, as the price is about the same as only the ends themselves.

Good luck

if funds are not limited, rebuild the whole thing, a 69 everything is worn out. new a frames upper and lower, tie rod ends, rebuilt calipers, new pads, rotors, rubber hoses. center link. the car will drive like new. but other than that you will have to look for obviously worn out parts first. look at the pad wear, see if its even side to side, look for a totaly worn out tie rod end or ball joint, check the wheel bearing tightness. if teh rubber brake hoses have not been replaced in the last few years. i would start there if nothing is obvious.
