"ramps" instead of floorjack?

Post by surfingfreeman »

Hello all
wondering if anyone uses ramps (if that is what they are called) instead of a floorjack to do basic under carriage work without the hassle of dragging out the 2-ton beast and Jack stands? Would be nice to find one that gave enough clearance to accomodate my impressive midriff :0 thanks

I too have an impressive girth - and have found ramps work fine for the basic undercar stuff (that's all I've had to do) such as oil changes and tranny oil changes. Forget the creeper, though, not enough clearance for both the creeper and the belly. The ramps also help elevate the engine compartment when working on upper engine stuff. Which is great for a tall person.

Yes. I have a nice pair of steel ramps. They are a huge time saver over using a jack and they get the car pretty high. They work wonderfully for the Spider. The only time I use a jack is when I need the suspension to drop or to remove tires. And they were only $40 for the pair but that was a few years ago. Highly recommended...

The only gripe that I have, is that since I painted my garage floor it is too slick and they slide when I try to drive up them. They work good for cleaning grass from under the riding mower too.

They even slide on bare concrete. But I use a couple of pieces of 1/4" plywood (bigger than the ramps), under them and they stick just fine.

My dad had the slipping problem with ramps, and used a length of 2 x 4 between the ramp and the wall to act as a stopper.

I like the ramps too. Is stick them up under the tire and pound them in a little with a small sledge. That gives the tires a little grip before I start driving up. Sometimes I put them behind the front tires and drive up on them in reverse. It keeps the 'ramp' part out of the way when I'm working in the middle part of the car.
