Insurance Emergency!

Post by Nick »

So I recently applied for insurance through Hagerty and was denied because I occasionally drive my spider to work. I told them that I wouldn't drive it to work if they insured me but they wouldn't have any of it. I have to wait a full year before applying with them again. I am currently insured (at a very reasonable rate for a 19 year old) with Progressive. They won't insure my Fiat though because it's too old even though I only want liability. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to get insurance for it at a reasonable rate? Geico wants double what Progressive is charging me just for one car. Was wondering if anyone knew of a collector car company that a 19 year old could use? I'm seeing my wonderful Fiat-filled summer slip away before my eyes...

Very pretty car! I was with progressive for a while... no problems.. I am in Oklahoma. Age may be the problem?

I live in New York. The lady I spoke to at Progressive had an error message appear (as did I online, I think they just fill out the same form I was filling out online) but the error message said something about the vehicle having special requirements that prevented it from being insured. So I don't think it was my age. The lady wasn't too helpful about error, she didn't know anything about it.

Haggerty isn't the only classic car insurer out there, there are at least half-dozen companies offering policies now

State farm is pretty good. They insured me at 16 with my first spider, granted one years worth of insurance was about what I paid for the car.

There are other dealers, but hardly any of them seem to offer to drivers under 21. State Farm was pretty expensive for both cars, but I might have to try again now. If it's not collector insurance I'll have to switch both cars over, but it could be worth it.

I have State Farm in Ontario, very good rate for classic car coverage, but then I am about 35 years older than you. They know I drive it to work once a week or two, but for me that is less than 10km through a small city and no highways. On the other hand, their regular coverage for my daily driver was quoted at double what I pay elsewhere.

Well I emailed customer service and they said it is against their policy to insure any car older than 1980. So they must only insure cars 30 years old and newer. I only want liability, so this really makes no sense to me.

State farm is the same issue with me, they want way more than Progressive does for my daily driver. I really can't find anyone to insure me...

Maybe you should contact a broker and let them do all the work. You're not the first young person with an old car in New York state.

I would recommend State Farm as well. No complaints here and they insured my car based on $30,000.00 replacement cost.

I think I pay a couple of hundred a year.

I'm not sure the Hagerty agent got it right. I obtained insurance through them very recently and they have no problem with me occasionally driving it to work when I talked with them. I have the same year car.

For my 1977 Spider, Hagerty quoted $102/year online. No questions about when/where/how many miles/etc (at this point). I still have to contact my State Farm agent, however, for a competitive quote.

I wouldn't be surprised if age is a demographic that factors (heavily?) into Hagerty's rates/decisions to insure.

Good luck,
