Starter Switch
Starter Switch
Has anyone wired their ignition switch to a red covered toggle or a long NASCAR like toggle switch. I was thinking of this, but want to know if anyone else has done this. I still want to have the key for the wheel lock, i just want the switch to start it. I would also want to run and hide a kill switch--would it be better to run off the coil or the starter?
I already have a switch for the fan and i think a row of toggle switches would be cool.

Re: Starter Switch
I would use a momentary toggle or push button and run it through a relay that would connect to the starter solenoid wire where as the switch would ground the relay and then supply voltage to the starter when you press the button or toggle. I was thinking about adding one of those big red push start buttons on mine just for shitsandgiggles. I would do a kill switch in the same fashion to which you can disable the fuel pump, if electric or voltage to the coil.

Re: Starter Switch
if you do a kill switch on the starter, the car could still be stolen by push starting. I think the best method is the lock that goes in the fuel line. Even with a kill switch to the coil, a jumper wire from the alternator is easily rigged.
Or, just keep your car in such poor condition that no one would want it

Re: Starter Switch
well, the original poster and I don't have an electric fuel pump. so, we'd be interested in that fuel line lock mechanism you briefly mention. is this an electrovalve?

Re: Starter Switch
I never thought about someone push starting it, but if your are stupid enough to steal a fiat they probably can drive stick.
Thanks for the hints SLO I didn't know they were called momentary toggle but that what i was planing on using. All the parts came today so i start to fix this weekend!

Re: Starter Switch
JCWhitney used to sell a brake lock, push down on the pedal to make pressure and then lock the valve to hold it. A key was needed to release it. I did a search and couldn't find it. I suppose you could do the same thing with a Line Lock.

So Mark, what would be the best way to hook up this Fuel Pump Kill Switch or lock on the fuel line?So Cal Mark wrote:if you do a kill switch on the starter, the car could still be stolen by push starting. Re: Starter Switch
You're all forgetting about who would steal these cars. People just wanting a joy ride, or your kids while you're out of town. There is not a market for used parts like there is with a Toyota. Nobody will take the time to get under the hood and add a jumper wire. Just kill the coil and hide the switch well. Take your keys so your kids won't run off with it.

So Mark, how would you do kill switch/fuel pump set-up?
Re: Starter Switch
Well, since Mark never bothered to answer my question, I will post what I figured out. There is a black/white wire (Ground) and a green/black wire (Power) connected to the fuel pump. In order to mod a kill switch, you will splice into the green/black wire and run that wire to a non-illuminated toggle. Use a simple silver on/off toggle. You will also run a ground wire from the toggle to a suitable location to ground the toggle/switch. I mounted my kill switch (well, I can't tell in case anyone gets any funny ideas ) and it works!DoctorPDR wrote:So Mark, how would you do kill switch/fuel pump set-up?
Re: Starter Switch
That sounds really cool, and from what i have looked at it doesnt really have to be that heavy of a wire. What gauge did you end up using?
Re: Starter Switch
16-18 gauge wire is fine. I think that's the same size of the wires to the fuel pump.jsdieter wrote:That sounds really cool, and from what i have looked at it doesnt really have to be that heavy of a wire. What gauge did you end up using?

Re: Starter Switch
Doc - why couldn't you have just posted your solution without the backhand to Mark? I'm getting kind of tired with the tone that seems to come through in a lot of your posts. There is another forum, you know...
