1800 HEAD IDENTIFICATION

Post by manoa matt »

Hey Guys,

Durring my Fiat restoration, my search for parts was so successfull that now I have several large boxes of misc. parts which I bought off of an old fiat guy. In one of the boxes is a complete cylinder head off an 1800 engine. I'm shure its off a 79 or 80 spider, but I can't tell if its the carburator or fuel injected head. I would like to sell it to International Auto Parts, or Vick Autosports as a core return. (unless someone else will give me $200 for it... hint, hint...) I will post some pix when I get home tonight, but in the mean time are there any distinctive marks/ports/numbers that I might look for. There are some numbers cast into the head on the top, but I'm at work now and can't remember what they are. Any help or pix would be greatly appreciated.

I also have some fuel injected components that I'd like to sell (intake manifold with cover and cover gasket) if anybodys intestered.

thanks

Matt

If it's an 1800 head it's from 74 to 78. 79 and up are 1995cc.

My bad, I'm so used to looking for parts, and talking about my 78, 1800 I forgot about the other models. Just confirms I need help identifying what this head is

the 1800 head should have the 4 air injection ports next to the exhaust side head bolts. If it's a 79 head it will have either one or two large holes next to the spark plug holes for the air injection check valve(s). If it's a FI head, the intake port should have a small eyebrow at the top for the injector nozzle

only the earliest 1800s didn't have air pumps. I know all from 75-on did. I believe the 1800 didn't begin until 74 so most did have air pumps. I'll have to research 74 to see if they were air pump equipped

None of the 74 have air pumps and some early 75s didnt either .
I have seen a few 75s that didnt have airpumps .

I did some research this morning; according to the factory manual, all 124s had air pumps beginning in 1974. That was the first year for the 1800 also. So, if you've seen 74s without pumps either there was a motor swap or the system was removed (now, who would do something like that?)

Theres 1800 heads that dont have the air injection ports on the exhaust
side i had one and have seen many around and as for the 74 i saw
i thought they were stock but maybe not .

I know things in print can be off from time to time but maybe the spiders
i saw were mid year cars like my 131 it's a 75 but Reg as a 76 .

Just my two cents, or pesos. I have a very early 1800 head on my 2 liter block. Guy Croft said it was an early 1800 head because it has a different size valve guides then all the other 1800 heads. Thus he had to have some made to complete the work on my head. My head has the ports the Mark was talking about.

Dan you might have had a 1592 head on your 1800. 1592 & 2L FI heads do not have emission ports. 1592 heads have the bosses for the air injection manifold but they are not drilled and tapped.

is it possible the early 1800s came with 1592 heads on them ? :?

no, think about it. thats like saying an early 1608 came with a 1438 head. as that guy from star trek would say( thats totally illogical sir)
