Console overlays.

Has anyone used one of those console overlays? I guess they glue on top of the crappy cracked up one you got now. Anyway, they are quite expensive so I just thought I would get the general consensus about them before I bit the hook.

On that note, does anyone know a a good way to repair them or has anyone had any success repairing them? Any steps or hints you can share?

What I did with my console that had places where the outer layer was separating from the metal inner body of the console.

First I took it out of the car ,,then I cleaned it and let it dry ,,then I cut the new console cover to fit in and around the places that needs cut out to fit over the top of the other console.Remember that you have a copy of what you need to cut out from the old console so not bad at all to cut out what needs to be cut out to fit it over the old one. if any thing cut out a little and try it and then cut out more until it fits..

I fitted it a few times and then after finding it was a good fit I glued it and put in over the old console and then clamped it in many places. I also tapped it with masking tape to help hold it while drying ..More clamps is better for a good fit.

As you can see from the picture ,,you may or may not get an exact color match ..I liked mine better than before .

I have here a picture of what I took apart to get it out so I could put a new cover on it ,,I dont recomend doing it in place ..

I am pretty sure others on here have done this also and can add to what I have said or shown ,so check back in for a week or so and you will get a lot more on this console covering ..

They can be recovered. Here are some shots of the 81 anniversary edition console that was in cars with leather interior. You should be able to see how it is stitched up. It was streched over the existing console. You'd just have to fill in the cracks and splits with some Bondo, the upholster over it.

unless you spend alot of time fitting the cover, they look just like their name. With the amount of time it takes to properly fit one, you could install a new one and have half a day left over

Looks alot better than a chewed up cracking console. Good work. i put on a dash cover ONCE. It did take alot of time to trim and resize the glove box and such. In the end thought it looked really nice.

I agree ,,most of us like working on these cars ,,so whats a little time and you can save a $200

If you buy a new console or a new console cover ,,it's pretty much a given that the color will not match what the rest of your car has due to sunshine and the elements .
I didn't feel like it was a hard job to do after getting help from the forum on what others did to get it done,,In fact Mark told me I did as good on my console as he had ever seen,, Thx Mark ..I also didn't think it was a long job ither,glue set up for me in 8 hours over night with the help of heated room . Heck ,if I can do it so can you ..
I didn't know that the color would be off so much until the console arrived and I sit in my car with the other Beige ,but at least it was the console in the middle of the car that was a little off color for a match .

I bought a used door arm rest and when I got it ,,it was not only off color beige it had a green tint to it so I elected to keep the one I had rather than put the one I bought on as it stuck out like a sore thumb.. Best to see the part in person as pictures does not show what you are getting ..
