Re: Retro Spider?
"Retro" cars are such a sad commentary on our ability to design. Can you imagine if the designers at Bertone or Pininfarina sat around in 1962 or so and said, "you know, what the automotive world really needs is a new copy of the 1938 Topolino"? Let the past be the past and get on with moving the genre forward.

You are sooooooo accurate! Never heard it put that way. I find the concept car interesting for 2008. I designed my version in 1999, just prior to the Y2K conversion. Maybe they were watching the forum??? Their design is definitely better than mine, but the back has the same weightiness. For the right price, I'd buy it.

Well, opinions are like a..holes -- everyone has one. Obviously, I disagree with your assessment.Redline wrote:"Retro" cars are such a sad commentary on our ability to design. Totally disagree. This perspective would seem to imply that any design concepts that were good (functionally or aesthetically) in the past are, by definition, not any good anymore. Retro-styled designs are not copies of old designs. For instance, the new Mustangs and Chargers - no one would mistake them for their 60's/70's counterparts. However, there were some good design concepts in those old cars that are still good today. Great, modern design that acknowledges, and appropriately refers to great design ideas that have gone before turns out...well, great.Redline wrote:"Retro" cars are such a sad commentary on our ability to design. Now I wouldn't say that I'd only want to see retro designs on the road - totally new design concepts are obviously important, necessary, and often (though not always) great to look at. But retro as a sad commentary? I'd say not.
