Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
Got my renewal from GEICO and I now officialy pay more to insure the 76 Fiat than my 98 BMW 328ic. Disturbing trend.
A couple of months ago I call classic car insurance companies and could not insure it because I only had one extra car and another driver in the house. The Fiat could not be viewed as an emergency vehicle if the primary one goes down.
So who do you guys use for insurance and what approximate prices you pay?
I am in the mid $200s every 6 months with all multiple, 5 year customer, no accidents... discounts. Think it is too much for a 1976 Fiat that I drive 2-3,000 miles a year.

Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
Most insurance companies are useless for old cars. They will mostly cover the minimum liability. And they will give you very little for an old car if there is a loss. I use geico for my normal cars but Hagerty Insurance for my two spiders.
As long as you have another primary car and you store the collector car in a garage, I paid $150 for one car. Now $185 for two fiat spiders a year. That is fully insured with 3 tows a year if I need it and I have both cars at a named value of $7000 each if they get stolen or totaled. They pay for the full named value for a loss.
But you have to prove that the Fiat is not your primary car. I had to fax them my insurance for the other cars.

Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
I had my car appraised for $30,000 and State Farm is insuring it. As far as rates, we pay $140.00 every six months for full coverage. Unfortunately for me, I have zero points with the State of Michigan and State Farm decided to surcharge me for two tickets I received for speeding 1-5 over. No points on my license as far as the State of Michigan is concerned, but State Farm assigns their own point system for ratings. F'n CROOKS!

Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
I have had low rates insuring my Spider as long as I say it's an additional car used for recreation only and is used less than 5000 miles a year. The rates seem to go way up after that. I think a lot of us here don't drive ours that much but some probably do.
Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
You guys need to work the insurance companies. Get to know your insurance rep. Lisa is my isurance lady. I have her on speed dial and she is the ONLY one I will talk to about anything concerning insurance. She is responsible for getting me and my wife the best price on our insurance. We have all 4 cars and our homeowner's with her and all 4 cars have full coverage. The spider, which she did need detailed pictures of, has full coverage and an agreed upon residual value of $3,800.00. The cost associated with adding the Fiat - $1.00 / year. She knows me and knows that I am not going to drive it that much. She also knows that I really like the car and have no intention of trying to commit insurance fraud with it. The only caviat of this deal is that I can not get antique car plates and inspection. I have to go the full "Regular car" route with the Fiat. Big deal, inspections are $32.00 bones and all they check are lights, brakes and horn. You guys need to get yourself an agent you can trust and establish a long lasting relationship with him or her. By the way, our monthly cost for all 4 cars and the house is 415.00 \ mo.
Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
As a former insurance agent, I can tell you this much. I always loved it when I could establish great relationships with my clients. However...rates are set by the insurance company, not the agent. So it really doesn't matter how many expensive gifts you buy your agent throughout the year. Their hands are tied when it comes to rates and that's that. But, if your agent has good relationships with the underwriter, sometimes they can over look certain things. Unfortunately, this type of arrangement doesn't happen anymore. Those were the good 'ole days!katsi wrote:You guys need to work the insurance companies. Get to know your insurance rep. Lisa is my isurance lady. And yes, it is a good idea to have your agent on speed dial. We do the same thing.
Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
I went with Hagerty with my '79. Very reasonable cost; full coverage for appraised value. No mileage limit; full collision coverage; glass coverage. I think the amount per year is $149. Of course Massachusetts is one of those states that regulates auto coverages.

I'm 19 years old and a Hagerty quote is gonna put me back $380 a year. Cheaper than any other company though, state farm was going to charge me $800 / yr knowing that I only drive the spider in the summer. Its kind of expensive, but definitely still worth it.

Mine is $93.40 per year without collision, comprehensive or towing. That's through Geico. Haggerty quoted me $134 for full coverage at $10K value.

Well, I'm not going to argue with you. But, I think you will find that when you get down here to Texas, things work a little bit differently. By the way, your auto insurance is NO GOOD once you are a resident in Texas. You will need to get a Texas Policy. It's that different. Even if its with the same company. Try to change address and they will tell you that you need to cancel your policy and get a new one - a Texas one!DoctorPDR wrote:As a former insurance agent, I can tell you this much. Re: Fiat Spider Insurance Rates
I called State Farm already and they informed me that I need to simply transfer my Michigan policy to a Texas Policy with State Farm, once we have an address. We will be renting an apartment, condo, or house until we get situated but informed me that I cannot get renters insurance if we live in the Clear Lake area. I asked why and they stated because of the hurricanes. They'll insure my cars but not the things I have in the place where I live at? So what do you suggest on this John?katsi wrote:Well, I'm not going to argue with you. But, I think you will find that when you get down here to Texas, things work a little bit differently. I'll jump on this band wagon. Me too too too. Full coverage Hagerty Insurance for three Fiats for a complete year for less than one daily driver for six months. I grilled the poor fella on how the insurance worked, too, just in case something happened to one of my poor babies.
