Brake issue

Post by jsdieter »

So today i was driving home and this problem with the brakes started. They worked fine at speed but when i was about to stop -about 10 mile per hour- the brake pedal would start to shake, the engine speed would drop way down almost to the point of stalling, and the charge light came on (im assuming because the engine speed was so low. Just checked it and there were no fluid leaks.
Im thinking its something with the vacuum but dont know where to start. could it just be a vacuum hose or the booster or master cylinder?

With the car parked, in neutral, and idleing press on the brake pedal. What happens? Do you hear a loud hiss/sucking sound near the brake pedal? Does the idle speed go down and the car wants to die?

If so, then its the brake booster. Check the hose first that goes from the intake manifold to the booster. It could be old/cracked, but doubtfull that it would just fall off or come unhooked. In the mean time untill you get a new booster you can just unhook the hose at the booster and plug the end with an old bolt. Or take the hose off the intake manifold and find a rubber cap for the fitting. Manual braking without the booster will stop the car, but require a bit more effort.

Are you pushing the clutch in when stopping? lol Automatic?? As stated its probably a falty hose from the manifold to booster or the booster itself. I just replaced my hose with one from Car Quest for a few bucks. Some Fiat suppliers think that hose is worth $10.00 a foot. Replacement is not braided but it is vacuum booster hose.
