Penetrating oil comparison

Post by boogiedude »

I got this off of a bmw 2002 forum I regularly visit, I figured this would come in handy seeing as many of the projects we pick up have at least some rust and plenty'o stuck bolts

interesting comparison of various penetrating oils:

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break
out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective
test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

Penetrating oil Average load

None ..................... 516 pounds

WD-40 .................. 238 pounds

PB Blaster ..............214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone.

Note: The "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this
one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as
good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

Anyone have any personal experience backing up these claims?

interesting results. I used the atf in the cylinders of the 1600 to loosen them up. The stuff worked. Kinda concerned about the acetone though, here if you buy a can of that stuff, people might think your "cooking" something ilegal. Going to try the blend, it sounds like good stuff to have around.
Have to admit, the wd-40 has been dissapointing most times and end up breaking the nut/bolt off and going to the nut and weld method.

That "Home Brew" idea sounds interesting. I'm sure it will have instant acceptance from Fiat owners in the South (you know who you are :) )

But how do they store it? And dispense it? Acetone will eat thru almost any plastic, and you'd need some sort of squeeze bottle to squirt it on the target. :?

Our local Fiat "expert" swears by Wurth Rost Off. I've gone thru several cans of PB Blaster in my project. But the best tip I've received was to use an impact wrench whenever possible; it's easier on the bolt.

Can you get Zep45 at local stores? What's it cost about? I found this just in time. I need to purchase some asap.

I recently needed something for my rusted on front crank nut. I had PB Blaster and wd-40. I sprayed it down with both and still no luck other than bending the Harbor Freight Chain vise grip almost in half with a pipe on my breaker bar. I work as an outside salesman for a petroleum supply co. and we have all sorts of oils. People swore by Kroil but its was too expensive for my taste. But being at wits end I bought a can and soaked it down every day for about a week. I then used my impact and nothing at first. I then decided to try and tighten it further in hopes to brake the rust loose. Back to reverse and a full air compressor and just let it hammer on it, finally some movement and the nut came off.

To me the Kroil reminded me of atf by its color and was lighter weight than expected. But I now will try the AATF and acetone method on future endeavors. Anyone want to buy a partially used can of Kroil?

ATF and acetone? Shoot, any girl worth a darn should have both of these at home. Should I use paint thinner or nail polish remover? Can't wait to try this...now all I have to do is find some rusty nuts.

good thing you didn't say that when you were in Calif, but then since it never rains here there shouldn't be any rusty nuts

There are plenty of rusty nuts I can try this out on in the Southeast. I might try a test of my own.

I read about that mix a while back and tried it.The problem is trying to apply it.I put it in a Lucas oil treatment bottle ,and tried to squeeze it on.Really messy, and stains everything. It would probably work well,if you had a way to apply it.Just impossible to get it into a tight area.
Rusty nuts in the Southeast ??
